DIRECTIONS: Identify the incorrect sentence or sentences


(a) Ice cream became an edible morale symbol during World War II.

(b) Each branch of the military tried to outdo the others in serving ice cream to their troops.

(C) In 1945, the first ‘floating ice cream parlor’ was built for sailors in Western Pacific.

(d) When the war ended, and dairy product rationing was lifted, America celebrated its victory with ice cream.

A) a and b
B) Only c
C) b and c

Solution:
In b, the pronoun “their” does not agree with the subject “each branch”. The correction is “Each branch…… its troops”. In c, the expression “Western Pacific” should be preceded by the definite article 


The definite article 'The': 


The definite article 'the' is the most frequent word in English.


We use the definite article in front of a noun when we believe the listener/reader knows exactly what we are referring to:


~ because there is only one.


1. The Pope is visiting Russia. 

2. The moon is very bright tonight. 

3. Who is the president of France? 


This is why we use the definite article with a superlative adjective. 


1. He is the tallest boy in the class. 

2. It is the oldest building in the town. 


because there is only one in that context.
