Question:

DIRECTIONS: Refer to the following information for the following questions.

The letters A, B, C, D, E, F and G not necessarily in that order, stand for seven consecutive integers between 1 and 10 both inclusive.

● D is 3 less than A.

● B is the middle term.

● F is as much less than D as C is greater than D and none of three sit adjacent to each other.

● G is greater than C.

The greatest possible value of C is how much greater than the smallest possible value of D?

Options:
A)

2

B)

3

C)

4

D)

5

E)

6

Solution:

Ans: (d)According to the given conditions the following arrangement, (in increasing order) is possible.

From the (i) condition-

 D <__<__< A

From (ii) condition-

There are 7 letters so B must be at fourth letter.

__ <__<__<  B <__<__<__

From (iii) condition-

F <__ < D <__< C

From condition (i) & (iii)

F <__ < D <__< C < A

Now,If we place one letter before F than condition(ii) will get violated. So the the one letter must be placed after A.

F <__ < D <__< C < A <__

From(iv) G should be placed after A and the remaining letter i.e. E must be at second place.

So the final arrangement will be-

F < E < D <  B < C < A < G

The greatest possible value of C is 8 the smallest possible value of D is 3. Therefore the difference between the two is 5.
