Where did 3 come from ?

Question:
A 320 metre long train takes 80 seconds more to cross a platform twice its length than it takes to cross a pole at the same speed. What is the speed of the train in metre/second?
Options:
A) 16
B) 10
C) 6
D) Cannot be determined
E) None of these
Solution:
Ans: (e) Let the speed of the train be x m/sec.

∴ \(\cfrac{320\times3}{x}-\cfrac{320}{x} \ = 80\)

⟹ \(\cfrac{320×2}{x} = 80\)

⟹ x = (320×2)/80 = 8m/sec = speed of train

Dear Student, length of platform is twice of train length, so total distance covered by a train is thrice of its length. Keep Learning with Us Best Wishes Team Toprankers
