Question:

DIRECTIONS: Study the following graph carefully and answer the questions that follow:

The pie chart given below shows the selling price of components of a  4-wheeler. The breakup of the transmission is as given in the bar graph below.

If the cost price of the tyres goes up by 30%, by what amount should the sale price be increased (in Rs.) so as to maintain the same amount of profit margin?

Options:
A) 3000
B) 6000
C) 2000
D) 3500
E) None of these
Solution:

Ans: (c) Tyre constitute 15% of transmission cost which is 20% of Rs.200000.

Cost of transmission = Rs.40000.

Cost of Tyre = 0.15 x 40000 = Rs.6000.

Increase in cost of Tyre = 30% = Rs.1800.

Current cost of components = 0.9 x 200000 = Rs.180000.

New cost price = 180000 + 1800 = Rs.181800

∴ Profit margin = 10% of SP

C.P. = S.P. – Profit = 90% of S.P.

∴  S.P. = \(\cfrac{C.P.}{0.9}\)

To maintain, a profit of 10%, the SP must be Rs.202000. So increase in S.P. = 202000 - 200000 = Rs.2000.
