but another speed is also given, as in 150 km/hr. why not using it to get the answer, why only 200 km/hr. any special logic behind this??

Question:

Two boys begin together writing out a booklet containing 8190 line. The first boy starts with the first line, writing at the rate of 200 lines an hour; and the second boy starts with the last line, then writes 8189th line and so on, proceeding backward at the rate of 150 line an hour. At what line will they meet?

Options:
A)

4680

B)

4850

C)

5860

D)

6850

E)

None of these

Solution:

Ans: (a)

Writing ratio = 200:150 = 4:3

Since equal quantities are taken,

Therefore in a given time, first boy will be writing the line number

=\(\cfrac{4}{7}\times8190=4680\)

Hence, both of them shall meet on 4680th line

Alternate method-

Duration of time of their meet

= \(\cfrac{(8190 lines)}{(200+150)lines/hr.}\)  = 23.4 hr.
Their line of meet = 200 × 23.4
= 4680 line

Writing ratio = 200:150 = 4:3
Since equal quantities are taken,
Therefore in a given time, first boy will be writing the line number
=(4/7)*8190 = 4680
Hence, both of them shall meet on 4680th line
