DIRECTIONS: Each question has a sentence with two blanks followed by four pairs of words as choices. From among the choices, select the pair of words that can best complete the given sentence.

A snake charmer stood playing a flute to a snake which _______ itself in a basket, its head raised in a graceful bend like the neck of a swan, while music stole into its _______ ears, like the gentle rippling of an invisible waterfall.

Options:
A)

packed, mild

B)

coiled, invisible

C)

rocked, sneaky

D)

wound, visible

E)

coiled, sharp

Solution:

Ans: (b)

The general tendency of a snake is raise only its hood while the rest of its body remains in a ‘coil’. Hence coil is the right word in the first blank. We have choices 1 and 3 with this word. The clue to the second word is in the last but one word of the sentence with a simile. ‘like the gentle rippling of an invisible waterfall’. The snake’s ears are compared to the rippling of an invisible waterfall. Hence the second word is ‘invisible’ making choice 3 the right answers. Hence all other options are rejected.
