what is Past Participle from?

Question:
DIRECTIONS: Which of the phrases given below each sentence should replace the phrase in bold to make it grammatically correct? If the sentence is correct as it is given and no correction is required, mark (5), ie (No correction required), as the answer.

No sooner had they began the programme than it started raining.

Options:
A) did they begun
B) had they begun
C) did it begin
D) when they began
E) No correction required
Solution:
Ans: (b) had they begun

If 'have, has or had’ is used then the main verb will be in the past participle form. So the sentence should read ‘had they begun’.

For regular verbs, adding -ed to the base form creates the past participle. For example, the past participle of cook is cooked. Past participles formed from irregular verbs may have endings like -en, -t, -d, and -n. Examples include swollen, burnt, hoped and broken.
