In the question it is given that C is 40% less efficient, ignoring this in the given solution the calculation is done by taking (140% * A) is unjustified.

Question:

A and B can together finish a piece of work in 10 days. If A starts working and after 3 days, A is replaced by B and B finished the remaining work in 24 days.

Quantity I:

Number of days taken by B alone to finish the piece of work.

Quantity II:

Number of days taken by C alone to finish the piece of work. (C is 40% less efficient than A).

Options:
A)

Quantity I = Quantity II or the relationship cannot be established from the information that is given

B)

Quantity I  ≤    Quantity II

C)

Quantity I   ≥    Quantity II

D)

Quantity I < Quantity II

E)

Quantity I > Quantity II

Solution:

Ans: (e) Number of days taken by A and B together to finish a work =10 days

∴     1 day’s work of A and B  =110

⇒     1A+1B=110

⇒1A=110-1B    ...............(i)

According to the question,

1A×3+1B×24=1

⇒3 110-1B+24B=1        [from eq. (i)]

⇒     310-3B+24B=1

⇒21B=1-310

⇒B=21×107    = 30 days

B alone can complete the work in 30 days.

A alone can complete the work in 15 days.

i.e.   1A=110-130

⇒    A = 15 days.

Quantity I: Number of days taken by B alone to finish the piece of work = 30 days.

Quantity II: Number of days taken by C to complete the work  =140100×    (A days)

=140100×15=21    days.

∴    Quantity I > Quantity II
