how to 45% calculate

Question:

In a test, minimum passing percentage for girls and boys is 30% and 45% respectively. A boy scored 280 marks and failed by 80 marks. How many more marks did a girl require to pass in the test if she scored 108 marks?

Options:
A) 132
B) 140
C) 160
D) 112
E) None of these
Solution:
Ans: (a) If the maximum marks of examination be x.

Then, \(\cfrac{x\times45}{100}=280+80=360 \)

\(\Rightarrow x=\cfrac{360\times 100}{45}=800\)

Therefore, minimum marks to pass for girls

= 30% of 800 = 240

\(\therefore\) Required difference = 240 - 108 = 132.

Alternate Sol:

Let max marks in subject = x
Boys gets 280 marks and failed by 80 marks, this means if he would have got (280+80) = 360 marks, he would have passed with 45%. This gives,
360/x * 100 = 45
Solve, x = 800
Let a girl needs y more marks to pass
Then (108+y)/800 * 100 = 30
Solve, y = 132

Let max marks in subject = x
Boys gets 280 marks and failed by 80 marks, this means if he would have got (280+80) = 360 marks, he would have passed with 45%. This gives,
360/x * 100 = 45
Solve, x = 800
Let a girl needs y more marks to pass
Then (108+y)/800 * 100 = 30
Solve, y = 132
