Question:
DIRECTIONS: In the following questions, some of the sentences have errors and some have none. Find out which part of a sentence has an error. If there is no error; mark your answer as ‘No error.

The hatred he had (a)/ for me (b)/ would have effaced (c)/ over the course of time. (d)/ No error (e)

Options:
A) (a)
B) (b)
C) (c)
D) (d)
E) (e)
Solution:
Ans: (c) It should be ‘effaced over the course of time’.

Efface means to remove something intentionally

Eg: The whole country had tried to efface the memory of the old dictatorship.

"with time, the words were effaced by the rain"

Use of would have is not required. 'Would have' is used with 'had' but in conditional sentences, to say that 'If this thing had happened that thing would have happened.'

It refers to an impossible condition in the past and its probable result in the past. These sentences are truly hypothetical and unreal, and there is always some implication of regret with these conditional sentences.

Eg: If it had rained, you would have gotten wet.

If you had worked harder, you would have passed your exam.

If you hadn't lied to me before, I would have believed you.

If I had known you were coming I would have baked a cake.
