from where 88 units come from

Question:

A and B can finish a work in 15 days and 18 days, respectively. Both of them work on alternate days starting with A. In how many days will the work get completed?

Options:
A) \(8 \cfrac{1}{3}\)
B) \(6 \cfrac{1}{3}\)
C) \(16 \cfrac{2}{3}\)
D) \(16 \cfrac{1}{3}\)
E) None of these
Solution:
Ans: (d) Let total number of units required to finish the work = LCM of 15 and 18 = 90 units

A can complete 90/15 = 6 units/day

B can complete 90/18 = 5 units/day

Since A and B are working alternatively, they cover 11 units in 2 days. Therefore, 88 units are covered in 8 x 2 = 16 days

Now, after 16 days, it will be A’s turn who has to complete 2 units.

A completes 2 units in 2/6 = 1/3 of a day.

∴ Time taken to finish the work

= 16\(\cfrac{1}{3}\) days.
