my answer is "retrace" only but it is given "regain" as answer and in explanation "retrace" is explained

Question:

DIRECTIONS: In the given passages there are blanks, each of which has been numbered. Against each, five words are suggested, one of which fits the blanks appropriately. Find out the appropriate word in each case.

The villagers _(a)_ me what the conditions were like at higher altitudes, and advised me to take enough food for a week. In the morning they showed me how to get to the track up the mountain. When the snow started _(b)_, it was very light, and I couldn't decide whether to go back down. I wondered whether to _(c)_ my steps and try to find the track again...As the snow got heavier I began to  _(d)_  that my life was in danger. Fortunately, my years in the Andes had taught me what to do in extreme conditions. I knew that there was a shepherd's hut somewhere on this side of the mountain that I could _(e)_ in, but I didn't know whether it was nearby or miles away.

Mark the correct option for blank _(c)_.

Options:
A) retrieve
B) restore
C) regain
D) resurface
E) retrace
Solution:
Ans: (e) retrace
A strong collocation is “retrace your steps, retrace your path, retrace your route, etc.” So, the most suitable verb for the blank is (e) “retrace” whose meaning is “to go back exactly the way you have come”: after a few minutes, he turned around and began to retrace his steps. Other words, though near in meaning, cannot serve the blank equally well and hence they are dismissed. The verb “retrace” is always used transitively, that is, it is followed by an object retrace something and “retrace” cannot be used without an object.
