b-g ratio (Question:1008330.3)

sir in this question, can we use direct ratio:
18:19:19=56
16:17:19=52
56:52=14:13

Question:

DIRECTION: The following table gives the students data of a college. 


There are a total of six departments in the college, namely, A, B, C, D, E and F, each comprising of three batches. The total number of students belonging to each department and the corresponding boy-girl ratio of each department is given in the table, but some of the information is missing. Study the table and answer the questions that follow.

In department A, the number of students in the three batches are in the ratio 17 :18 :19. If the number of boys in the three batches are in the ratio 18 :19 :19 respectively, and the number of girls are in the ratio 16 :17:19 respectively, then what is the boy-girl ratio in the whole department A?

Solution:

 

Ans: (d)

Total number of students in department A = 17x + 18x + 19x = 324

⇒ 54x = 324

⇒ x=324/54=6

Now, let the no. of boys in the three batches be ‘18y’, ‘19y’ and ‘19y’

Also, let the no. of girls in the three batches be’16z’, ‘17z’ and ‘19z’

Total no. of students in first batch = 17x = 17 x 6 = 102

⇒ 18y + 16z = 102 ---—(1)

Total no. of students in second batch = 1 8x = 18 x 6 = 108

⇒ 19y + 17z = 108  ……… (2)

Total no. of students in third batch = 19x = 19 x 6 = 114

⇒ 19y + 19z = 114 -—(3)

Subtracting (2) from (3),

⇒ 19y + 19z — 19y — 17z = 114—108

⇒ 2z = 6 

⇒ z = 3

Substituting in (3),

⇒ 19y = 114—57

⇒ y = 57/19 = 3

Hence, total no. of boys in department A = 18y + 19y + l9y = 56y = 56 x 3 = 168

Total no. of girls in department A = 16z + 17z + 19z = 52z = 52 x 3 = 156

∴ Boy-girl ratio in department A = 168: 156 = 14: 13
