so it means that question can be solved with either of the statement so the answer must be C

Question:
DIRECTIONS: Answer the question on the basis of the information given below:

Question consists of a question and two statements, I and II. Choose

(a) if the question can be answered with the help of statement I only.

(b) if the question can be answered with the help of statement II only.

(c) if the question can be answered with the help of either of the statements alone.

(d) if the question can be answered only with the help of both statements together.

(e) if the question cannot be answered even with the help of both the statements.

P says to Q, “I am 3 times as old as you were 3 years ago.” How old is P?

I. Q’s age 16 years from now is same as P’s present age.

II. P’s age nine years from now is 3 times Q’s present age.
Options:
A) (a)
B) (b)
C) (c)
D) (d)
E) (e)
Solution:
Ans (a) Statement II, gives the same information as the given condition. So only statement I is sufficient.

You are absolutely wrong....

Question is:
P says to Q, “I am 3 times as old as you were 3 years ago.” How old is P?

I. Q’s age 16 years from now is same as P’s present age.
II. P’s age nine years from now is 3 times Q’s present age.

Detail Sol:

Let Present ages of P and Q are x and y respectively

So, x=3y-9 or, x-3y=-9 _____(1)

From statement I,
y+16=x or, x-y=16 ________(2)
From statement II,
x+9=3y or, x-3y=-9 ____(3)

Here,Linear Equations (1) and (3) are same(Thats why you can not determine the value of x and y....That why answer of the question you can not determine with the help of statement II only)

But, Linear Equation (1) and (2) are different(So you can find exact value of x and y)...If you can find the value of x and y means you can answer the above question.....Thats why statement I only can answer the question....

just consider only statement 2 is given forget the statement 1 cannot we solve it by statement 2 alone

Statement II, gives the same information as the given condition, so same linear equation is formed from second statement as given in the condition in question. In case of two same linear equation, there is no solution occurred.....So, statement II is not sufficient to answer....

Hence, only statement I is sufficient.
