From statements 3 equations are obtained and there are only two variable. So any of two can be used to find the value of x and y. So answer should be any of two statements.

Question:
DIRECTION: In each of the following questions, a question is followed by information given in three statements. You have to study the question along with the statements and decide, the information given in which of the statements (s) is necessary to answer the question?
What is the two digit number?

I. The number obtained by interchanging the digits of the number is greater than the original number by 18.

II. Sum of the two digits of the number is 14.

III. Difference between the two digits of the number is 2.
Options:
A) Any two of the three.
B) Only I and III.
C) II and either I or III.
D) All the three.
E) III and either I or II.
Solution:

Ans: (c) Let the number be 10x + y.

(10y + x) - (10x + y) = 18

⇒ 9(y - x) = 8

⇒ y - x = 2  .....(i)

From statement II

x + y = 14    ....(ii)

From statement III,

y - x = 2       ... (iii)

Clearly, statement II and either I or III can supplement the data to know x and y and hence the number.
