Question:

DIRECTIONS: These questions are based on the following information.

Seven persons - A, B, C, D, E, F and G – each of different height live on different floors of a seven storeyed building. The ground floor is considered the first floor and the floor just above the ground floor is considered second floor and so on. The following information is known about their heights and the floors on which they live.

Only two persons are shorter than E who lives neither on the third floor nor on the topmost floor. The number of persons who live between A and D is half the number of persons who live between C and G. G lives two floors above D who is neither the tallest nor the third tallest person. Both A and G the taller than both B and C. The one who is the tallest lives on the middle floor. The number of persons taller than B is equal to the number of persons shorter than G. The one who lives on the third floor is not the shortest.

Who is the second tallest person?

Options:
A)

D

B)

G

C)

F

D)

A

E)

B

Solution:

Ans: (b)

It is given that only two persons are shorter than E who lives neither on the third floor nor on the topmost floor. Hence E is the third shortest person. G lives two floors above D who is neither tallest nor the third tallest person. The number of persons who live between A and D is half the number of persons who live between C and G. The one who is the tallest lives on the middle floor, which means the one who is the tallest lives on the fourth floor. Hence D lives either on the fifth floor, or on the third floor. If D lives on the fifth floor, then G and C live on the seventh and fourth floors respectively. The one who lives on the fourth floor is the tallest but both A and G are taller than C hence D does not live on the fifth floor. Hence D lives on the third floor and G lives on the fifth floor. Either two or four persons live between G and C. Hence two persons live between G and C and C lives on the second floor and A lives on the first floor. As B and E are not the tallest persons, F lives on the fourth floor and B lives on the topmost floor and E lives on the sixth floor. Both A and G are taller than both B and C. The one who is the tallest lives on the middle floor. The number of persons taller than B is equal to the number of persons shorter than G. Hence G is the second tallest person and B is the second shortest person. D is the fourth shortest person and A is the third tallest person. Their living arrangement and height comparison can be shown as follows.

E

Height:

F>G>A>D>E > B>C

G is the second tallest person.
