Read the question carefully which has been given: How many such symbols are there each of which is either immediately preceded by a number or immediately followed by a letter?

Here either or has been mentioned...

So, we will count in both the case:
(1) number symbol
(2) symbol letter

Hence, five(=J, $R,#T,4ϵ, ϵt) is correct answer...
