how y=27

Question:

A pot contains 81 liters of pure milk. \(\cfrac{1}{3}\) of the milk is replaced by the same amount of water. Again \(\cfrac{1}{3}\) of the mixture is replaced by that amount of water. The ratio of the milk and water in the new mixture is

Options:
A) 1:2
B) 1:1
C) 2:1
D) 4:5
E) None of these
Solution:

Quantity of milk in new mixture = x\(\left ( \frac {x-y}{x} \right )^n\)

= 81 \(\left ( \frac {81-27}{81} \right )^2\) = \(\cfrac{81\times54\times54}{81\times81}\)

= 36 liters

and quantity of water in new mixture

= 81 - 36 = 45 liters

∴ Required Ratio = 36 : 45 = 4: 5
