noun or pronoun used before (with, together with, in addition to, and not, like, unlike, including, but, besides, headed by, guided by,......) are connected with other words in the sentence whose verb is used a/c to noun or pronoun used before these words. so the verb should come according to the chief which is singular. option A should be correct.

Question:

A sentence/a part of the sentence are underlined. Four alternatives are given to the underlined part which will improve the sentence. Choose the correct alternative and click the button corresponding to it. In case no improvement is needed, click the button corresponding to "No improvement".

The Chief, with all his men, were massacred.

Options:
A)

was massacred

B)

could be massacred

C)

is massacred

D)

No improvement.

Solution:
Words joined to a Singular Subject by with, together with, in addition to, or, as well as, etc. are parenthetical, and therefore do not affect the number of the Verb. When the Subject of the Verb is a Relative Pronoun care should be taken to see that the Verb agrees in Number and Person with the Antecedent of the relative.

Hence, option A is the appropriate option.
