1. 500 peole voted FOR the bill( you either mean this) or
2. 500 people voted in election.
you took second case ok
500-x is initail number of supporter to bill
500-2x is after supporter
so initially 300 for, 200 against => majority of 100.
now finally A/Q rejected by 3 * initial majority. => 100*3=300
so total vote against bill = 300+200=500 which is total strength. so you cant mean that.
so lets say you meant total extra votes against bill this time, which is =300
even then it is not 100% increment to people voteing against bill initially, which is 200 according to you and so increment value should be 200*2=400, but it is 300 only.

Question:

 A total of 500 people voted for a resolution, but after some discussion, the opponents were increased by 100%. The motion was then rejected by a majority, three times as great as that by which it was formerly passed. How many voted for and how many voted against the resolution initially?

Options:
A)

100 (for); 400 (against)

B)

300 (for); 100 (against )

C)

300 (for); 200 (against )

D)

200 (for); 200 (against)

Solution:

Ans: (c)

Let the number of opponents be x.

So, number of supporters = 500 - x

After discussion, number of opponents = 2x

And number of supporters = 500 - 2x

According to the question,

500 - x = 3(500 - 2x)

1500 - 6x = 500 - x

1000 = 5x

x = 1000/5 = 200

Number of supporters = 500 - 200 = 300

Alternatively:

Add to existing solution.

2x - 500 + 2x = 1500 - 6x

4x - 500 = 1500 - 6x

or 10x = 2000

x = 200

Hence, 300 for and (500 – x) are against.

Therefore, 300 (for) and 200 (against) .

It's correct, he is asking about the previous data, after discussion 400 against and 100 for
i.e. majority of 300
Earlier against were 200 and 300 for so
Majority was 100
I hope you're getting my point
