Eminent Jurist Weeramantry passes away
Eminent jurist C.G. Weeramantry, who was the first Sri Lankan to be appointed to the International Court of Justice (ICJ), passed away on 5th January. He was 90.
● Justice Weeramantry began his judicial career in the 1950s, and became Sri Lanka’s youngest Supreme Court judge.
● He later served as a senior judge there before moving to Australia as the Sir Hayden Stark Professor of Law at Monash University.
● He set up the Colombo-based Weeramantry Centre for International Peace and also served as president of the International Association of Lawyers against Nuclear Arms, a non-governmental organisation headquartered in The Hague.
प्रख्यात विधिवेत्ता सी.जी. वीरमनट्री, जो श्रीलंका के अंतर्राष्ट्रीय न्यायालय (आईसीजे) के पहले जज नियुक्त किये गए, 5 जनवरी को निधन हो गया। वह 90 वर्ष के थे ।
● न्यायमूर्ति सी.जी. वीरमनट्री ने 1950 के दशक में अपने न्यायिक कैरियर शुरू किया, और श्रीलंका के सबसे कम उम्र के सुप्रीम कोर्ट के जज बने।
● बाद में उन्होंने वहां मोनाश विश्वविद्यालय में कानून के सर हेडन स्टार्क प्रोफेसर के रूप में ऑस्ट्रेलिया जाने से पहले एक वरिष्ठ न्यायाधीश के रूप में कार्य किया।
● अंतर्राष्ट्रीय शांति के लिए कोलंबो आधारित सी.जी. वीरमनट्री ने केंद्र की स्थापना की और भी परमाणु शस्त्र के खिलाफ, एक गैर सरकारी संगठन द हेग के मुख्यालय में वकीलों के इंटरनेशनल एसोसिएशन के अध्यक्ष के रूप में कार्य किया।
