Japanese Researcher Wins Nobel for Work on Cell Recycling
The Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet on 3 October 2016 decided to award the 2016 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine to Yoshinori Ohsumi.
● Ohsumi is bestowed with the prize for his discoveries of mechanisms for autophagy.
● He discovered mechanisms underlying autophagy, a fundamental process for degrading and recycling cellular components.
● Autophagy is the natural, destructive mechanism that disassembles, through a regulated process, unnecessary or dysfunctional cellular components.
● Yoshinori Ohsumi is a Japanese cell biologist specializing in autophagy.
● He is a professor in Tokyo Institute of Technology's Frontier Research Center.
जापान के योशिनोरी ओहसुमी को 3 अक्टूबर 2016 को ‘ऑटोफेजी' से संबंधित उनके काम के लिए इस साल का नोबेल चिकित्सा पुरस्कार दिए जाने के लिए चुना गया.
● ऑटोफैजी एक ऐसी प्रक्रिया है, जिसमें कोशिकाएं ‘‘खुद को नष्ट करती हैं'' और उन्हें बाधित करने पर पार्किंसन एवं मधुमेह जैसी बीमारियां हो सकती हैं.
● ऑटोफेजी कोशिका शरीर विज्ञान की एक मौलिक प्रक्रिया है जो कोशिकाओं के क्षतिग्रस्त हिस्से के सही पुनर्चक्रण के लिए जरुरी है और इसकी बेहतर समझ का मानव स्वास्थ्य एवं कैंसर सहित दूसरी बीमारियों के लिए बडा निहितार्थ है.
● नोबेल ज्यूरी ने आज कहा कि ओहसुमी की खोज से ‘‘कोशिकाएं अपनी सामग्रियों को किस तरह पुनर्चक्रित करती हैं, इसे समझने के लिए एक नया प्रतिमान स्थापित हुआ.''
● 71 साल के ओहसुमी ने 1974 में तोक्यो विश्वविद्यालय से पीएचडी की थी.
● वह इस समय तोक्यो इंस्टीट्यूट ऑफ टेक्नोलॉजी में प्रोफेसर हैं.
