Bill English elected as New Zealand’s new Prime Minister
New Zealand’s National party has chosen Bill English as the country’s 39th Prime Minister. He will be succeeding John Key, who announced his surprise resignation last week.
● English’s name was confirmed for the role during a National Party meeting, which took place early on 12 December 2016. He was formerly serving the nation as the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance (MoF).
● While Paul Bennett will be replacing English as the new Deputy PM, senior Cabinet minister Steven Joyce has been named as the new finance minister.
● He has been a politician for 26 years.
● He entered politics in 1990 when he was elected to the Parliament as a National Party candidate.
● Prior to it, he was a farmer and a public servant with degrees in commerce and literature,
● He was first appointed as the Finance Minister in 1999 but he couldn’t complete even a year in office, as his party got defeated in the elections held in the same year.
● He replaced Jenny Shipley as the leader of the National Party in 2001.
● He was replaced by Don Brash in 2003 following the party’s worst election defeat in 2002.
● In November 2006, he was named deputy under John Key’s leadership and after the party’s 2008 win, he was sworn in as both Deputy PM and MoF, a role which he continued to handle until 2016.
न्यूजीलैंड में सत्तारूढ़ नेशनल पार्टी ने बिल इंग्लिश का देश के नए प्रधानमंत्री के रूप में चयन किया है. उनका चयन पिछले सप्ताह जॉन की द्वारा प्रधानमंत्री पद से इस्तीफा देने के बाद किया गया.
● चयन से पूर्व वेलिंगटन स्थित गवर्नमेंट हाउस में आयोजित बैठक में इंग्लिश को सर्वसम्मति से समर्थन दिया गया.
● 12 दिसम्बर 2016 को 54 वर्षीय बिल इंग्लिश को पद एवं गोपनीयता की शपथ ग्रहण कराई गयी. इससे पहले बिल इंग्लिश, जॉन की मंत्रिमंडल में उप प्रधानमंत्री एवं वित्त मंत्री थे.
● स्टेट सर्विसेज मंत्री पाउला बेनेट को बिल इंग्लिश सरकार में उपप्रधानमंत्री नामित किया गया है. इंग्लिश के अनुसार उनकी सरकार आर्थिक विकास का समर्थन करने वाली सरकार होगी.
● बिल इंग्लिश व्यावसायिक रूप से किसान हैं.
● बिल इंग्लिश वाणिज्य एवं साहित्य के विख्यात ज्ञाता हैं.
● वह वर्ष 1990 से निरंतर सांसद हैं और वह वर्ष 2002 में नेशनल पार्टी के नेता बने.
● उस समय पार्टी को चुनाव में हार का सामना करना पड़ा.
● जॉन की मंत्रिमंडल में वित्त मंत्री रहते वह न्यूजीलैंड के बजट को वापस बचत की स्थिति में लेकर आए और उन्होंने अर्थव्यवस्था की विकास दर करीब तीन प्रतिशत बनाए रखी.
● बिल इंग्लिश वर्ष 2017 के अंत में चुनाव में खड़े होंगे.
● इंग्लिश एक कैथोलिक हैं.
● उन्होंने वर्ष 2013 में समलैंगिक विवाह को वैध बनाने का विरोध किया.
● वह गर्भपात एवं इच्छामृत्यु के खिलाफ अपने विचार प्रस्तुत कर चुके हैं.
● बिल इंग्लिश के अनुसार न्यूजीलैंड की समृद्धि का अर्थ देश में ऐसे असंतुष्ट मतदाता नहीं हैं जो ब्रेक्जिट एवं अमेरिका के नवनिर्वाचित राष्ट्रपति डोनाल्ड ट्रंप की जीत के लिए जिम्मेदार हैं. उनकी सरकार की प्राथमिकता सर्वाधिक जरूरतमंदों को अवसर देने की होगी.
