India's only active volcano is back from the dead after 150 years
Barren Islands volcano, India's only active volcano, is reportedly spewing lava and ash after a gap of 150 years.
- It erupted for about four hours in January, scientists from the National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) claimed.
- The volcano is situated in Barren Islands in the Andaman & Nicobar archipelago.
- Some unsubstantiated reports even claim that it is South Asia's only active volcano.
- Its first recorded eruption dates back to 1787. Since then, the volcano has erupted more than ten times, including the one this year.
- The samples collected by the NIO team will help in deciphering the nature of the present and past volcanic activity in the region.
- The team, however, did not land on the island because it was considered too dangerous.
- Scientists from CSIR-NIO have been surveying the Andaman Basin and they have identified many small submerged volcanoes in a linear chain called a volcanic arc.

Kurukh language given official status by Bengal Government
- The West Bengal government today gave official status to Kurukh language, listed as an endangered language by the UNESCO, to mark the International Mother Language Day, which is observed to mark the language movement in the then East Pakistan in 1952.
- Announcing this at a function to celebrate the day, state Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that official recognition would also be given to Rajbangshi/Kamtapuri language spoken in parts of north Bengal.
- She said that around 16 lakh Oraon people spoke Kurukh language in Bengal and that the language had been identified as a vulnerable language in the UNESCO's list of endangered languages.
- The chief minister lamented the apathy among a section of people in the state in learning or speaking Bengali.
- Marking the movement in Bangladesh in 1952 for recognition of Bengali as an official language when it was part of Pakistan, February 21 has been recognised as the International Mother Language Day by the United Nations.

(HEP).

Union Government clears Coastal Surveillance Project
The Ministry of Defence on 21 February 2017 gave its in-principle approval to set up 38 radar stations to boost surveillance of the country’s 7,517 km long coastline.
- The approval for the project was given at a meeting of the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) chaired by the Union Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar in New Delhi.
- The project will be executed at a cost of Rs 800 crore by the Bengaluru-based Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL).
- Apart from the 38 static radar stations, 4 mobile surveillance stations will also be set up under the project.
- These surveillance stations will be integrated with the Vessel Traffic Management System (VTMS) in the Gulf of Kutch and Khambatt.
- These stations are in addition to 46 radar stations, which have already been set up under the Phase I of the Static Sensor Chain Project.
- The project seeks to set up gap-less electronic surveillance along India’s coastline.

Defence Security Corps Celebrates 70th Raising Day
Defence Security Corps (DSC), which was raised on 25 February 1947 as ‘Defence Department Constabulary’, celebrated its 70th Raising Day on 25 February 2017.
- DSC troops have been providing security to various sensitive defence and civil installations across the length and breadth of the Country since 1947.
- On the occasion of the 70th Raising Day, Lieutenant General JS Cheema, Deputy Chief of Army Staff (Information System & Training) and Colonel Commandant of DSC, congratulated all ranks and complimented them for their relentless efforts in guarding sensitive Defence and civil establishments.
- On this solemn occasion, he also remembered the supreme sacrifices made by the martyrs of the Corps, exhorted all ranks to seek inspiration from their valour and felicitated eight Junior Commissioned Officers and Other Ranks for their distinguished service.
- So far, DSC has been awarded three Vir Chakras, one Kirti Chakra, four Shaurya Chakras, ten Sena Medals, two Vishisht Seva Medals and fifteen Chief of Army, Air and Naval Staff Commendation Cards.

DEFENCE
Indian Coast Guard Ship ICGS AYUSH commissioned in Kochi
Indian Coast Guard Ship ICGS AYUSH was commissioned on 18 February 2017 in Kochi, Kerala. The ship was commissioned by Vice Admiral AR Karwe, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Southern Naval Command.
- The fast patrol vessel (FPV) is fitted with state-of- the-art navigational and communication equipment including Integrated Bridge System (IBS) and Machinery Control System (MCS).
- The ship is capable of undertaking multifarious tasks such as surveillance, interdiction, search and rescue and medical evacuation.
- Post commissioning, the ship will be based at Krishnapatnam in Andhra Pradesh.
- The vessel will be under the administrative and operational control of Commander, Coast Guard Region.
- The Cochin Shipyard was incorporated in the year 1972 as a fully owned company by the Union Government.

Scientists discover drowned Pacific Ocean continent Zealandia
A group of scientists have claimed to discover a continent two-thirds the size of Australia beneath the south-west Pacific Ocean.
- The discovery was recently reported in a paper titled Zealandia: Earth's Hidden Continent in the journal of the Geological Society of America.
- This newly proposed continent is about 1.74 million square miles in size and 94 percent submerged. However, the continent protrudes above the ocean surface in the form of New Zealand and New Caledonia.
- Zealandia, also known as Tasmantis, is a nearly submerged continental fragment that sank after breaking away from Australia 60–85 million years ago.
- The continent had separated from Antarctica between 85 and 130 million years ago.
- It may have been completely submerged about 23 million years ago, and 93 per cent of it remains submerged beneath the Pacific Ocean. However, it is still unknown how strongly Bollons Seamount remains connected to the continent.
- The continent supports substantial inshore fisheries and contains New Zealand's largest gas field, near Taranaki.
भारत का इकलौता सक्रिय ज्वालामुखी पुनः सक्रिय हुआ
अंडमान एवं निकोबार द्वीप समूह में 150 से भी अधिक वर्षों तक निष्क्रिय रहने के बाद वर्ष 1991 में सक्रिय होने वाले भारत के एकमात्र सक्रिय ज्वालामुखी से एक बार फिर से राख निकलना शुरू हो गया है.
● गोवा स्थित राष्ट्रीय समुद्र विज्ञान संस्था (एनआईओ) के शोधकर्ताओं ने यह जानकारी दी.
● सीएसआईआर एनआईओ ने एक बयान में कहा कि अंडमान और निकोबार द्वीप का एकमात्र सक्रिय ज्वालामुखी एक बार फिर सक्रिय हो गया है.
● बैरन द्वीप पर स्थित ज्वालामुखी पोर्ट-प्लेयर से लगभग 140 किलोमीटर उत्तर-पूर्व में स्थित है तथा 150 वर्षों तक निष्क्रिय रहने के बाद वर्ष 1991 में फिर से सक्रिय होने के बाद यह रुक-रुक कर सक्रिय होता रहा है.
● अभय मुधोलकर की उपस्थिति में गोवा में स्थित सीएसआईआर राष्ट्रीय समुद्र विज्ञान संस्था (सीएसआईआर- एनआईओ) के वैज्ञानिकों की एक टीम ने यह जानकारी दी है कि ज्वालामुखी एक बार फिर सक्रिय हो गया है और इसमें से लावा तथा धुआं निकलने लगा है.
● बैरन द्वीप भारत का एकमात्र सक्रिय ज्वालामुखी है.
● यह अंडमान निकोबार द्वीप समूह की राजधानी पोर्ट ब्लेयर से करीब 500 किलोमीटर उत्तर पूर्व में बंगाल की खाडी में स्थित है.
● यह द्वीप लगभग 3 किलोमीटर में फैला है.
● यहां का ज्वालामुखी 28 मई 2005 में फटा था. तब से अब तक इससे लावा निकल रहा है.
पश्चिम बंगाल ने 'कुरुख' भाषा को आधिकारिक दर्जा दिया
पश्चिम बंगाल की मुख्यमंत्री ममता बनर्जी ने 21 फरवरी 2017 को अंतरराष्ट्रीय मातृभाषा दिवस पर 'कुरुख' भाषा को आधिकारिक दर्जा प्रदान किया है.
● उन्होंने इसके साथ ही उत्तर बंगाल के विभिन्न इलाकों में बोली जाने वाली राजवंशी या कामतापुरी भाषा को भी जल्द आधिकारिक दर्जा दिए जाने की बात कही.
● इस विषय में एक कमेटी गठित की गई है, जो इसकी स्कि्रप्ट तैयार करेगी.
● गौरतलब है कि कुरुख भाषा बोलने वाले लगभग 16 लाख उरांव लोग बंगाल में रहते हैं.
● यूनेस्को की इस सूची में इसे लुप्तप्राय: भाषा के तौर पर सूचीबद्ध किया गया है.
● अंग्रेजी माध्यम के विद्यालयों में अंग्रेजी सिखाई जानी चाहिए लेकिन साथ में बांग्ला भी सिखाया जाना चाहिए.
● सभी भाषाएं एक समान हैं. मातृभाषा विचार व्यक्त करने का माध्यम होना चाहिए.
सीसीईए ने अरुण -3 जल विद्युत परियोजना में एसजेवीएन के निवेश के प्रस्ताव को मंजूरी दी
आर्थिक मामलों की मंत्रिमंडलीय समिति (सीसीईए) ने नेपाल के अरुण -3 जल विद्युत परियोजना (एचईपी) में सतलुज जल विद्युत निगम लिमिटेड (एसजेवीएन) के निवेश प्रस्ताव को मंजूरी प्रदान की.
● 22 फरवरी 2017 को नई दिल्ली में प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी की अध्यक्षता में हुई सीसीईए की बैठक में यह अनुमोदन किया गया.
● एसजेवीएन एक केंद्रीय सार्वजनिक क्षेत्र का उपक्रम है जो 900 मेगावाट अरुण -3 जल विद्युत परियोजना में 5,723.72 करोड़ रुपये का निवेश करेगा.
● इस परियोजना की पूर्ण होने की अवधि परियोजना की वित्तीय तारीख के बाद 60 महीने की होगी.
● पूर्व-कार्योत्तर का अनुमोदन एसजेवीएन अरुण -3 पावर डेवलपमेंट कंपनी (प्रा.) लिमिटेड (एसएपीडीसी) के समावेश के लिए दिया गया था.
● एसएपीडीसी, अरुण -3 एचईपी की कार्यान्वयन एजेंसी है. यह पहले से ही नेपाल में एसजेवीएन की 100 प्रतिशत सहायक के रूप में नेपाल में शामिल की गयी है.
● पहले से ही कार्य कर रहे किसी घटक को या किसी नेपाली प्राधिकरण को केंद्रीय विद्युत प्राधिकरण (सीईए) द्वारा प्रमाणित किया जाएगा और तदनुसार परियोजना लागत में आवश्यक कटौती की जाएगी.
केन्द्र सरकार ने तटीय निगरानी परियोजना को मंजूरी प्रदान की
21 फरवरी 2017 को रक्षा मंत्रालय ने देश की 7517 किमी लंबी समुद्र तट की निगरानी को बढ़ावा देने के लिए 38 रडार स्टेशन स्थापित करने को अपनी सैद्धांतिक मंजूरी दे दी.
● रक्षा मंत्री मनोहर पर्रिकर की अध्यक्षता में ऩई दिल्ली में हुई रक्षा अधिग्रहण परिषद (डीएसी) की बैठक में इस परियोजना को मंजूरी दी गयी.
● परियोजना का क्रियान्वयन बेंगलुरु स्थित भारत इलेक्ट्रॉनिक्स लिमिटेड (बीईएल) में 800 करोड़ रुपये की लागत से किया जाएगा.
● इसके अलावा 38 स्थिर राडार स्टेशनों, 4 मोबाइल निगरानी स्टेशनों को भी परियोजना के तहत स्थापित किया जाएगा.
● इन निगरानी स्टेशनों को कच्छ के रण और खमबाट में स्थित पोत यातायात प्रबंधन प्रणाली (वीटीएमएस) के साथ जोड़ा जाएगा.
● ये 46 रडार स्टेशन उन अतिरिक्त रूपों में है जिनमें पहले से ही पहले चरण के तहत स्थिर सेंसर चेन परियोजना को स्थापित किया गया है.
● परियोजना का उद्देश्य भारत की समुद्री तट के अंतर को इलेक्ट्रॉनिक निगरानी की स्थापना कर कम करना है.
डिफेंस सिक्योरिटी कोर ने अपनी स्थापना की 70वीं वर्षगांठ मनाई
डिफेंस सिक्योरिटी कोर (डीएससी), जिसकी स्थापना 25 फरवरी, 1947 के ‘डिफेंस डिपार्टमेंट कांस्टेबुलरी’ के रूप में की गई थी, ने आज 25 फरवरी, 2017 को अपनी स्थापना की 70वीं वर्षगांठ मनाई।
● डीएससी के सैनिक 1947 से ही देशभर में स्थित विभिन्न महत्वपूर्ण रक्षा एवं सिविल प्रतिष्ठानों को सुरक्षा प्रदान कर रहे हैं।
● 70वीं वर्षगांठ के अवसर पर, आर्मी स्टाफ के डिप्टी चीफ (सूचना प्रणाली एवं प्रशिक्षण) और डीएससी के कर्नल कमांडेंट, लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल जेएस चीमा ने महत्वपूर्ण रक्षा और सिविल प्रतिष्ठानों को सुरक्षा प्रदान करने के अथक प्रयासों के लिए कोर के सभी अधिकारियों और सैनिकों को बधाई और शुभकामनाएं दीं।
● इस अवसर पर उन्होंने कोर के उन शहीदों का भी स्मरण किया, जिन्होंने अपना जीवन देश के लिए न्यौछावर कर दिया। उन्होंने सभी सदस्यों से कहा कि वे शहीद सैनिकों की वीरता और बहादुरी से प्रेरणा ग्रहण करें।
● उन्होंने 8 जूनियर कमीशंड अधिकारियों और अन्य रैंकों के सदस्यों को उनकी विशिष्ट सेवा के लिए सम्मानित भी किया।
● डीएससी के सदस्य अभी तक 1 वीर चक्र, 1 कीर्ति चक्र, 4 शौर्य चक्र, 10 सेना पदक और 2 विशिष्ट सेवा पदक तथा 15 सेना, वायुसेना और नौसेना चीफ प्रशंसा पत्रक प्राप्त कर चुके हैं।
661 कैवेलरी ने आर्मी पोलो चैम्पियनशिप जीती
प्रतिष्ठित आर्मी पोलो चैम्पियनशिप के रोमांचक फाइनल में 61 कैवेलरी ने आर्मी सर्विस कोर को हरा कर चैम्पियनशिप जीती।
● 31 जनवरी, 2017 को शुरू हुई इस प्रतियोगिता के लीग मैचों में भी कड़े मुकाबले देखने को मिले, जिनमें आर्टिलरी रीमाउंट और वेटेरिनरी कोर और आर्मर्ड कोर ने हिस्सा लिया।
● सेना अश्व संबंधी खेलों में लम्बे समय से प्रभुत्व कायम किए हुए है।
● इसके खिलाड़ी एशियाई खेलों में पदक विजेता, विश्व कप खिलाड़ी, पद्मश्री और अर्जुन पुरस्कार विजेता रहे हैं।
● आर्मी पोलो चैम्पियनशिप 10 वर्ष के अंतराल के बाद 2015 में फिर से शुरू की गई।
● इसमें भारतीय पोलो सर्किट से जाने माने खिलाड़ियों ने हिस्सा लिया, जिनमें कर्नल नवजीत सिंह संधु और लेफ्टिनेंट कर्नल रवि राठौड़ शामिल थे।
● लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल आर.वी. कानितकर, क्वार्टर मास्टर जनरल ने आर्मी पोलो चैम्पियनशिप ट्राफी बड़ी संख्या में मौजूद दर्शकों के बीच 61 कैवेलरी को प्रदान की।
आईसीजीएस आयुष भारतीय तटरक्षक बल को सौंपा गया
कोचीन शिपयार्ड लिमिटेड (सीएसएल /CSL) ने भारतीय तटरक्षक बल के जहाज आईसीजीएस आयुष को 18 फरवरी 2017 को कोच्चि, केरल में सेना के सुपुर्द कर दिया. पोत को वाइस एडमिरल ए आर कर्वे, फ्लैग ऑफिसर कमांडिंग-इन-चीफ, दक्षिणी नौसेना कमान द्वारा सेना में शामिल किया गया.
● तेज गश्ती पोत (FPV) अत्याधुनिक नौवहन और संचार उपकरणों से सुसज्जित है. इसमे एकीकृत ब्रिज सिस्टम (आईबीएस) और मशीनरी नियंत्रण प्रणाली (एमसीएस) भी एकीकृत हैं.
● आईसीजीएस आयुष जहाज विविध कार्यों जैसे निगरानी, पाबंदी, खोज, बचाव और चिकित्सा के मामले में भी सक्षम है.
● आईसीजीएस आयुष को कृष्णापट्टनम (आंध्र प्रदेश) के तटरक्षक केंद्र से प्रचालित किया जाएगा.
● पोत तटरक्षक क्षेत्र के प्रशासनिक और परिचालन नियंत्रण कमांडर के अधीन कार्यरत रहेगा.
● 50 मीटर लंबा और 7.6 मीटर चौड़ाई वाला यह पोत कोचीन शिपयार्ड द्वारा निर्मित अन्य पोतों की तुलना में आकार में काफी छोटा है.
● पोत का ऊपरी ढांचा एल्युमीनियम मिश्रधातु से निर्मित है.
● कोचीन शिपयार्ड केन्द्र सरकार द्वारा एक पूर्ण स्वामित्व वाली कंपनी के रूप में वर्ष 1972 में स्थापित की गयी.
● पिछले साढ़े चार दशकों में, कंपनी भारतीय जहाज निर्माण और जहाज मरम्मत उद्योग में एक अग्रदूत के रूप में स्थापित हुई है.
वैज्ञानिकों ने प्रशांत महासागर के अंदर विश्व का आठवां महाद्वीप खोजा
अनुसंधानकर्ताओं ने फरवरी 2017 के तीसरे सप्ताह में यह दावा किया कि उन्होंने प्रशांत महासागर के अंदर गहराई में विश्व के आठवें महाद्वीप को खोज लिया है.
● जिओलॉजिकल सोसाइटी ऑफ अमेरिका जर्नल में 18 फरवरी 2017 को प्रकाशित एक अध्ययन रिपोर्ट के अनुसार प्रशांत महासागर के अंदर मिले इस महाद्वीप का आकार भारतीय उप-महाद्वीप जितना है.
● अनुसंधानकर्ताओं ने इसे विश्व का आठवां महाद्वीप घोषित किया जिसे जीलएंडिया नाम दिया गया.
● अनुसंधानकर्ताओं के अनुसार दक्षिण पश्चिमी प्रशांत महासागर का 49 लाख किलोमीटर का क्षेत्र महाद्वीपीय परत से बना है.
● वर्तमान में इस महाद्वीप का 94 प्रतिशत हिस्सा जलमग्न है.
● न्यूजीलैंड के विक्टोरिया यूनिवर्सिटी ऑफ वेलिंगटन और ऑस्ट्रेलिया के यूनिवर्सिटी ऑफ सिडनी के अनुसंधानकर्ताओं ने जीलएंडिया की पहचान भूगर्भीय महाद्वीप के रूप में की.
● जीलएंडिया के बारे में अनुसंधानकर्ताओं का मानना है कि यह ऑस्ट्रेलिया से लगभग 80 मिलियन वर्ष पूर्व टूटकर अलग हो गया था.
● इसके पश्चात् यह समुद्र के धरातल में समा गया. यह उस समय के सबसे विशालकाय महाद्वीप गोंडवानालैंड का हिस्सा हुआ करता था.
