Noted music director Om Prakash Sonik, also known as Omi, part of the Sonik-Omi duo, died in Mumbai on 7 July 2016. He was 77. Sonik–Omi was an Indian composer working in duo consisting of Master Sonik (a blind music director) and his nephew Omi.
•    The duo was known for their work on Hindi film soundtracks. Some of their best-known works are Bhakti Mein Shakti, Dharma, Dil Ne Phir Yaad Kiya, Sawan Bhadon, Aabroo, and Raftaar.
•    Born in Sialkot (now in Pakistan), he along with his family had moved to India after Partition in 1947. The Sonik-Omi team gave music to over 100 Hindi films in the 1950-1980s period.
•    The duo were known for their work on Hindi film soundtracks. Some of their best-known works are Bhakti Mein Shakti, Dharma, Dil Ne Phir Yaad Kiya, Sawan Bhadon, Aabroo, and Raftaar.

American actor Noel Neill, the first actor to play the role Lois Lane on the Adventures of Superman television series died on 3 July 2016. She was 95.
Lois Lane is a fictional character who is an award-winning journalist and the primary love interest of Superman.
•    Noel Neill was born in Minneapolis on 25 November 1920.
•    In her teens, she was a popular photographic model.
•    In the mid-40s, she appeared in a leading role in one of Monogram Pictures melodramas.
•    She played the role in the film serials Superman (1948) and Atom Man vs. Superman(1950) with Kirk Alyn playing Superman/Clark Kent.
•    Over the decades, she appeared in various productions of the Superman franchise.
•    She often played the parent or other relative of one of the main characters, including the 1978 Superman feature film, the 1980s TV series Superboy, the 1990s primetime drama Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, and the 2006 film Superman Returns.

Elie Wiesel, a Holocaust survivor and Nobel Laureate passed away on 2 July 2016 in New York, U.S. He was 87.
•    In his first book, Night, Wiesel gave an account of his family being sent to the Nazi concentration camps.
•    Elie Wiesel was a Romanian-born American Jewish writer, professor and political activist.
•    He wrote mostly in French and English.
•    He was the author of 57 books, including Night, in which he shared his experiences as a prisoner in the Auschwitz and Buchenwald concentration camps.
•    He was also involved with Jewish causes and helped establish the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C.
•    He had been described as the most important Jew in America by the Los Angeles Times.
•    In 1986, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
•    Elie Wiesel was only 15 years old when he was sent to the Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland with his family in 1944.
•    After they were sent to Auschwitz, his mother and his younger sister were killed.
•    Wiesel and his father were later deported to the concentration camp at Buchenwald.
•    After they were taken to Buchenwald, his father only survived for eight months, dying just a few weeks before the camp was liberated.
•    In his book Night, Wiesel recalled the shame he felt when he heard his father being beaten and was unable to help.
•    He was tattooed with inmate number A-7713 on his left arm.
•    The camp was liberated by the U.S. Third Army on 11 April 1945.

Renowned Marathi writer Ramchandra Chintaman Dhere passed away on 1 July 2016 following prolonged illness. He was 86.
Dhere was known for his exhaustive research in folk literature and bhakti tradition of Maharashtra.
•    Ramchandra Chintaman Dhere was a Marathi writer from Maharashtra.
•    He was born in the town of Nigade in Pune district.
•    He obtained a Doctorate of Literature from Pune University.
•    He wrote over 100 scholarly books on Marathi folk literature and culture, Marathi literature, religious sects in Maharashtra, and lives of saint poets.
•    He also composed a few poems and musical plays.
•    He received a Sahitya Akademi Award in 1987 for his work Shri Vitthal: Ek MahaSamanvay.
•    His other important literary works are Dakshinecha Lokdev Khandoba, Marathi Loksanskrutiche Upasak, Gangajali and Musalman Marathi Santkavi among others.

Renowned painter and freedom fighter KG Subramanyan passed away on 29 June 2016 following a brief illness in Vadodra. He was 92.
•    Subramanyan was a versatile painter who blurred the lines between art and artisans by making his mark in pottery, design and terracotta art as well.
•    Born in 1924 in Kerala, he was a professor at various times at the Faculty of Fine Arts at MS University in Baroda and his alma mater, Kala Bhavan (Santiniketan) from where he finally retired in 1989. 
•    It was under the tutelege of Nandalal Bose and Ramkinkar Baij in Santiniketan between 1944 and 1948 that Subramanyan developed a penchant for art and social commentary through his works. 
•    Considered one of the pioneers of Modern Art, Subramanyan was also a freedom fighter and was imprisoned briefly during the Quit India Movement.
•    His paintings experimented with the idea of the Indian myth from which he borrowed a number of times. 
•    Subramanyan was also an art historian and his body of work forms a significant document of Indian art history. 
•    In 1955, he received a British Council Research Fellowship to the Slade School of Art at the University of London.
•    He was awarded with the Padma Vibhushan in 2012.
