Subject-wise List of Important Topics for CLAT PG 2027

From the entire CLAT PG syllabus, we have listed the most important topics for CLAT PG 2027. You can use this list to plan your preparation further.

Constitutional Law

Constitutional Law questions tend to circle around Fundamental Rights, the Basic Structure doctrine, and how power is split between the Centre and states, especially during an emergency.

  • Basic & Salient Features of the Indian Constitution / History / Preamble, Citizenship, Doctrine of Basic Structure
  • Fundamental Rights (Article 12 to Article 30), Directive Principles of State Policy (DPSPs) & Fundamental Duties
  • Judicial power: organization of the judiciary and the jurisdiction of the Supreme Court of India
  • Legislative power: procedures and privileges
  • Freedom of inter-state trade and commerce
  • Impact of emergency provisions on Centre-State relations
  • Federal structure: nature of Indian polity and cooperative federalism

Landmark cases like Kesavananda Bharati (Basic Structure) and Maneka Gandhi (Article 21) come up often enough that you should know the reasoning, not just the case name.

Law of Torts

Torts is one of those subjects that candidates underestimate right up until it shows up with 10 questions on the paper, as it did in 2024. It's also directly relevant if litigation or dispute resolution is where you're headed.

  • Classification of torts
  • Trespass
  • Nuisance, Negligence, and Defamation
  • Vicarious Liability
  • Consumer Protection
  • Culpability for misstatements and recklessness

For extra practice, this set of Law of Torts questions for judiciary exams overlaps heavily with what CLAT PG tends to ask.

Jurisprudence

Jurisprudence rarely asks you to define a term outright. It's usually a fact pattern dressed up as a passage, and you're expected to apply a school of thought or a jural concept to it.

This is also the subject that tends to matter most if academia or an LLM abroad is on your radar. It's the theoretical backbone examiners assume you've internalized.

  • Definition and nature of jurisprudence, sources of law, schools of jurisprudence, rights and duties
  • Power and liability
  • Person and liabilities
  • Ownership and possession
  • Corporate liability
  • Theories of punishment
  • Law and morals
  • Contemporary jurists, recent concepts, and legal maxims
  • Hohfeld's legal relations / jural analysis

Law of Contract

  • Formation of a contract, its validity, discharge, and performance
  • Agency contracts
  • Indemnity and guarantee
  • Contract formation
  • Discharge of contracts
  • Quasi-contracts
  • Void, voidable, and illegal contracts

Criminal Law

Criminal Law questions split evenly between substance (what counts as an offence, and what doesn't) and procedure (how a case moves through court).

Both halves matter, and if you're preparing with an eye on judiciary exams later, you'll benefit from this overlap the two exams test very similar ground.

  • Punishments
  • General exceptions
  • Abetment
  • Criminal conspiracy
  • Offences against body and property
  • Defamation
  • Powers of court under Cr.P.C.
  • Provisions of bail
  • Trial procedure
  • Other important provisions

Environmental Law

Environmental Law questions are usually built around a handful of principles, applied to a specific statute or a recent NGT ruling. Once you know the principles cold, the statute-matching becomes mechanical.

Core principles to know:

  • Precautionary Principle
  • Polluter Pays Principle
  • Concept of Sustainable Development and the Stockholm Declaration
  • Concept of Absolute Liability

Here are some of the acts worth knowing for this section:

  • National Green Tribunal Act, 2010
  • The Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974
  • The Environment (Protection) Act, 1986
  • The National Environment Tribunal Act, 1995
  • Indian Forest Act, 1927
  • The Forest (Conservation) Act, 1980
  • The Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972
  • Public Liability Insurance Act, 1991
  • International Environmental Law principles

Public International Law

This subject tests how well you can connect a treaty or declaration to a real-world application instead of simply recalling dates.

  • Overview of the subject
  • Sources of international law
  • Relationship between municipal and international law
  • Treaties and UN declarations: UDHR, ICCPR, ICESCR, and similar instruments
  • International organizations
  • Human rights and international law
  • Air and space law
  • Settlement of disputes

Thinking about which CLAT PG topics matter most for a career in international law or diplomacy? This section, alongside Constitutional Law, tends to carry the most weightage for that path.

Administrative Law

  • Scope and significance of Administrative Law
  • Rule of law, administrative actions: meaning and classification
  • Principles of natural justice: meaning, nature, and need for administrative direction
  • Procedural and adjudicatory functions
  • Liability of the administration
  • Administrative discretion and remedies
  • Administrative direction to quasi-judicial and statutory bodies
  • Doctrine of estoppel
  • Relationship between Constitutional Law and Administrative Law
  • Emerging trends in Administrative Law

Labour and Industrial Law

Labour compliance work is a growing practice area, and the recent codification of labour laws has made this section more exam-relevant than it used to be.

  • Industrial Relations Code, 2020, and Code on Social Security, 2020
  • Code on Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions, 2020
  • Code on Wages, 2020, and the Industrial Disputes Act
  • The Factories Act, 1948
  • The Standing Orders Act
  • Recent amendments to labour laws and the leading cases around them

Subject-wise Question Distribution in Previous Year CLAT PG Exams

We went back through the CLAT PG previous year papers and counted how many questions came from each subject, year by year.

One thing jumps out immediately: weightage is not stable. Constitutional Law alone has ranged from 10 questions in one year to 50 in another. That's the whole reason we keep saying "don't skip anything". A low number one year is no guarantee it stays low.

Here are a few points to know about the CLAT PG 2026:

The paper had 24 passages in total, in line with the format used in 2025.

  • Constitutional Law and Criminal Law were the heaviest sections (with 3 passages each) confirming they remain the two subjects you cannot ignore.
  • Jurisprudence appeared as 2 passages with relatively direct questions, making it a comparatively easier scoring zone if you've covered the core theories.
  • Torts, Contract Law, Public International Law, and IPR showed up as a mixed bag of doctrinal and applied questions rather than being confined to one or two passages.
  • Specific Relief Act (SRA) and Tax Law still made an appearance, which tells you nothing on this list is truly skippable.
  • Overall difficulty was rated moderate, with the paper's length (not its conceptual difficulty) being the main challenge candidates reported.

The pattern holds from 2025 too: that paper was split into Section A (Constitutional Law), Section B (Torts, Contract, International Law, Criminal Law, IPR & Jurisprudence), and Section C (law topics and contemporary issues).

Bottom line from the data: Constitutional Law, Jurisprudence, and Criminal Law have never gone to zero in any year. They are the most important topics for CLAT PG 2027.

Everything else has had at least one year where it barely showed up. This tells you where your focus should be, even on a bad prep month.

Check How to Prepare for CLAT PG 2027 >>

Here are the key takeaways:

  • CLAT PG 2027 questions will mostly come from recent and landmark judgments. Align your prep with that reality rather than pure textbook reading.
  • Constitutional Law, Jurisprudence, and Criminal Law have consistently carried the most weight and should get priority in any time-crunched study plan.
  • No subject goes to zero reliably. Torts and Administrative Law both jumped to double digits in 2024 after showing up barely at all in earlier years.
  • Reading and analysing past papers tells you more about what's coming than any prediction can.
  • How you study matters as much as what you study. Passage-based prep (not rote memorization) is what moves your score.
