AAI Law Officer Eligibility Criteria 2026: Detailed Overview

Before we get into the details, here's a quick overview of the AAI law officer eligibility criteria for 2026.

Criterion Junior Executive (Law) Manager (Law)
Educational qualification Professional law degree: 3-year LLB after graduation, or 5-year integrated course after 10+2 Same
Upper age limit (Unreserved) 27 years as on 7th September 2026 32 years as on 7th September 2026
Work experience None required 3 years post-qualification, in law
Nationality Indian nationals only Indian nationals only
Bar Council enrolment Not stated as a separate mandatory condition Not stated as a separate mandatory condition

Note: Make sure you don't confuse the eligibility conditions for the two posts that are part of the AAI law officer vacancy 2026.

Moving ahead, let's understand the eligibility conditions better.

Educational Qualification

  • AAI Junior Executive (Law) requires a professional degree in law. Either a 3-year LLB completed after graduation, or a 5-year integrated law course completed after 10+2, from a university or institution recognised by the Government of India.
  • Manager (Law) requires the same degree.

The degree must be full-time and from a recognised institution.

Does a 3-year LLB or a 5-year integrated degree carry more weight?

Neither. Both are equally valid and AAI expresses no preference. A 3-year LLB completed after any bachelor's degree counts the same as a 5-year integrated course completed after 10+2.

What AAI does check is that the degree is full-time and from a recognised institution. That is where qualification-stage rejections originate, not in the choice of route.

Reconsider or Don't Apply Under the Following Conditions:

  • Final-year LLB students: Your degree must be completed and your result declared by the cutoff date specified in the notification (7th September 2026). Candidates still awaiting results are ordinarily not eligible for this cycle.
  • LLM holders without an LLB: A master's in law does not substitute for the professional law degree requirement. You need the qualifying LLB or integrated degree itself.
  • Distance or correspondence law degrees: The Bar Council of India does not recognise law degrees earned through distance mode, and AAI requires a full-time professional degree.
  • Foreign law degrees: These need BCI equivalence recognition. Secure the equivalence certificate before you apply. Verification stages do not wait for paperwork in progress.

Age Limit

To apply for the AAI law officer exam 2026, the maximum age of candidates (as on 7th September 2026) should be:

  • Junior Executive (Law): 27 years
  • Manager (Law): 32 years

Latest date of birth to be eligible for Junior Executive (Law), Unreserved: 7th September 1999.

Several categories get age relaxation as given below:

Category Relaxation Effective limit - JE (Law) Effective limit - Manager (Law)
Unreserved / General 27 years 32 years
OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) +3 years 30 years 35 years
SC / ST +5 years 32 years 37 years
PwBD (Unreserved) +10 years 37 years 42 years
PwBD (OBC-NCL) +13 years 40 years 45 years
PwBD (SC / ST) +15 years 42 years 47 years
Ex-Servicemen Per Government of India orders Per GoI rules Per GoI rules
Serving AAI employees +10 years 37 years 42 years

Work Experience Requirement

The work experience requirement as per the AAI law officer eligibility criteria 2026 is:

  • Junior Executive (Law): No work experience is required; fresh law graduates are fully eligible.
  • Manager (Law): 3 years of work experience is mandatory. The 3 years must be post-qualification, counted only from the date you completed your law degree. Internships, pre-enrolment clerkships and articleship-style training completed before the degree do not count.

Your documentation needs to state three things explicitly, and most experience certificates omit at least one:

  • Your designation
  • The exact period of employment, with from and to dates
  • The nature of legal work handled

Both public-sector and private-sector legal experience is ordinarily counted. But experience that cannot be documented in the format AAI specifies will not be credited at verification, regardless of how long you worked.

Is Bar Council Enrolment Mandatory?

A professional law degree is the stated qualification requirement. Enrolment with a State Bar Council is not listed as a separate mandatory condition under Advt. No. 12/2026/CHQ/DR-CBT.

What that means in practice:

  • Not yet enrolled? You are not automatically barred. Your degree establishes eligibility.
  • Already enrolled? No disadvantage. Enrolment is useful supporting evidence at verification.
  • Enrolment lapsed or surrendered? Ordinarily not disqualifying where the requirement is degree-based. But declare your status accurately. Inaccurate declarations are treated far more harshly than unfavourable facts.

Nationality & Supporting Documents

Only Indian nationals are eligible. There is no provision for foreign nationals or OCI holders in this recruitment.

Every criterion above must be provable on paper. Have these ready before you open the form:

  • Class 10 and 12 certificates, for date-of-birth proof
  • Graduation certificate, if you took the 3-year LLB route
  • Law degree certificate and all semester or year mark sheets
  • Category certificate in the prescribed format, if claiming relaxation
  • PwBD certificate, if applicable
  • Experience certificates, for Manager (Law) applicants

You must have these documents in the correct format and dimensions when filling out the AAI law officer application form.

Final Self-Check: Are You Eligible to Apply for AAI Law Officer 2026 Exam?

Work through these steps in order. A "no" at any step means you are not eligible for that post this cycle.

Step 1: Nationality. Are you an Indian national?

Step 2: Degree. Do you hold a completed, full-time professional law degree:3-year LLB after graduation, or 5-year integrated course after 10+2, from a recognised institution?

Step 3: Age as on 7 September 2026. Junior Executive (Law): 27 years plus your category relaxation. Manager (Law): 32 years plus relaxation. Calculate to the exact day. If you are within a few months of the ceiling, check your date of birth against the relaxation table rather than estimating.

Step 4: Experience. Junior Executive (Law)? Skip this step; none is required. Manager (Law)? Can you document three years of post-qualification legal work with designation, exact dates and nature of work?

Step 5: Documents. Can you produce originals for every claim you make, including a category certificate in the exact prescribed format if you are claiming relaxation?

All five clear? You are eligible, and applications close 7th September 2026. Apply on time.
