How to Use CLAT Previous Year Question Papers (5-Step Method)

The difference between “solving papers” and “improving score” is how you attempt and how you analyse. Use this method with every CLAT paper you download.

  1. Attempt it like the real exam: Sit in one stretch with a timer. No breaks, no checking answers mid-way.
  2. Tag your confidence: Mark answers as Sure vs Guess (this reveals accuracy gaps instantly).
  3. Track time pain-points: Note where time leaked (long RC passage, tricky Legal options, LR sets, Quant calculations).
  4. Maintain an error log: Write the reason for every mistake (misread, weak concept, rushed, overthinking, silly error).
  5. Re-attempt after 7 days: Redo the weak areas from the same paper to lock in improvement.

Weekly plan (simple): 1 full CLAT question paper (Sat/Sun) → 2 days paper analysis → 3 days sectional practice based on mistakes → repeat.

How to Analyse a CLAT Question Paper (Use This Tracker)

After every paper, fill this tracker. It helps you measure improvement and prevents “random practice”.

Section Attempts Correct Wrong Time Spent What Went Wrong (1-line)
English (RC + VA)
Current Affairs & GK
Legal Reasoning
Logical Reasoning
Quantitative Techniques

Rule: Don’t attempt your next CLAT previous year paper until you’ve finished analysing the last one.

CLAT PYQ Trend: What Changes Across Years?

CLAT has evolved over time, but one thing remains consistent: it rewards strong reading comprehension and smart reasoning under time pressure.

  • Comprehension-heavy: English and Legal Reasoning demand active reading and option elimination.
  • Reasoning-driven: Logical sets need structure (assumptions, inferences, strengthening/weakening patterns).
  • Quant is selective: Quant rewards speed on basics rather than lengthy calculations.
  • GK needs a strategy: A mix of news-based and static facts makes smart revision essential.

Best order: Solve the latest 3–5 CLAT question papers first → then go backwards year-wise. This keeps your practice aligned with current exam behaviour.

Note on Sets / Question Booklets in CLAT Papers

Some CLAT PDFs are shared as question booklets and may contain different sets (Set A/B/C/D) with the same difficulty level but with questions/options shuffled. If your downloaded PDF mentions multiple sets, attempt only one complete set in a timed slot, then analyse it properly.

  • Don’t attempt multiple sets back-to-back without analysis — you’ll repeat the same mistakes.
  • Use one set as “mock” and keep another set for re-attempt after 7 days.
  • Focus on the method (accuracy + time log + error log) more than the number of papers attempted.

Common Mistakes While Solving CLAT Question Papers

  • Attempting multiple CLAT previous year papers without analysing mistakes
  • Reading RC like a story instead of question-driven reading
  • Over-spending time on one Legal/Logic question and losing easier marks later
  • Leaving GK completely for the last month (creates panic + random guessing)
  • Not re-attempting weak sections after 7 days (missed improvement cycle)
