IBPS SO Law Officer Syllabus 2026 for Prelims  

This year the IBPS SO law officer exam prelims has four sections: English Language, General Awareness, Reasoning, and Professional Knowledge.  

Here's the detailed syllabus for preliminary exam:

English Language 

A solid command of English matters here, and the section rewards accuracy over speed for most candidates: 

• Reading Comprehension: Passages followed by questions testing your ability to interpret written information. 
• Cloze Test: A passage with blanks where you select the contextually correct word. It tests vocabulary and comprehension together, not just grammar in isolation. 
• Para Jumbles: Rearranging scrambled sentences into a coherent paragraph. It’s a logical sequencing skill as much as a language one.  

Reasoning 

This section measures logical and analytical thinking, and puzzles/seating arrangement questions typically consume the most time relative to their mark value. Practice these for speed specifically, not just accuracy.  

• Data Sufficiency: Determining whether given data is adequate to answer a question, without solving it fully. 
• Coded Inequalities: Deriving relationships (e.g., if A > B and B < C, what's the relation between A and C?). It’s a pattern-based skill that improves quickly with repetition.  

General Awareness  

Since this section leans specifically toward banking, generic current-affairs reading isn't enough on its own.  

• Banking Terminologies: Terms like NEFT, RTGS, and Repo Rate come as direct, high-frequency questions. 
• Financial Awareness: Fiscal policy and budget-related developments, tracked over the months leading up to your exam.

Professional Knowledge 

This section is worth 50 of the 125 Prelims marks, more than any other section.  

It draws on the same foundational legal areas that carry into Mains: The Indian Contract Act, Negotiable Instruments Act, Banking Regulation Act, and constitutional provisions with banking relevance.

Banking Regulations 

These regulations keep the banking system stable and protect stakeholder interests, and questions here tend to test applied understanding rather than pure recall.  

• Capital Adequacy Standards: the reserve levels banks are required to maintain  
• KYC Norms: mechanisms specifically aimed at preventing fraud and money laundering  

Consumer Protection Act 

This directly shapes the bank-customer relationship, which makes it a recurring theme across both objective questions and, potentially, your Descriptive Paper if a scenario-based question comes up.  

• Right to Safety: financial products shouldn't carry undisclosed risk  
• Right to Information: clear disclosure of terms and conditions on financial products  

Laws Directly Linked to the Banking Sector  

• The Negotiable Instruments Act: governs cheques, bills of exchange, and similar instruments.

The Other Four Mains Sections 

Beyond Professional Knowledge, Mains also tests:  

• English Language: 30 questions, similar format to Prelims but with a longer duration 
• Reasoning: 40 questions, the highest question count of any Mains section  
• General Awareness: 30 questions, same banking-focused syllabus as Prelims, tested in greater depth  
• Descriptive Paper (English): 2 questions worth 25 marks (essay/letter/précis format), often the single most under-prepared section on the entire paper
