IBPS SO Law Officer Exam Pattern 2026 (Prelims & Mains)

IBPS made slight but significant changes to the IBPS SO law officer exam pattern in 2026. Before we get to know the exam pattern for prelims and mains in detail, let's take a look at how the IBPS SO law officer selection process works:

The Law Officer selection process for CRP SPL-XVI runs in three stages:

Stage

Exam

Description

Stage 1

Online Preliminary Exam

A qualifying round that filters candidates for Mains

Stage 2

Online Main Exam

Objective sections plus a descriptive paper; your merit rank depends on this exam

Stage 3

Interview

Conducted by the participating banks, coordinated by the Nodal Bank

The merit list will be prepared by combining your Main Exam score with your interview score.

What is the IBPS SO Law Officer Exam Pattern for Prelims 2026?

The Prelims is often treated as a formality by candidates who assume it's "just English and Reasoning." It isn't. There are now four sections in the updated exam pattern.

How many sections are there in IBPS SO Law Officer Prelims?

There are four sections: English Language, Reasoning, General Awareness (with a banking-industry lean), and Professional Knowledge.

The Professional Knowledge section alone is worth 50 of the 125 total marks.

Is There a Sectional Cut-Off in Prelims?

Yes. You need to clear the minimum cut-off in each of the four sections individually, not just an overall aggregate.

So, scoring brilliantly in Professional Knowledge won't save you if your Reasoning score falls below the section cut-off.

IBPS decides the actual cut-off marks closer to the result date, based on vacancies and difficulty level.

If you want to see how this plays out in real papers, it's worth going through IBPS SO Law Officer previous year question papers to get an idea of difficulty-level for each section.

What is the IBPS SO Law Officer Exam Pattern for Mains 2026?

The Main exam is no longer a single 100-mark Professional Knowledge paper. Now, it consists of five sections totalling 225 marks, and it includes a descriptive component.

Does IBPS SO Law Officer Mains include a descriptive paper?

Yes. It will be a 25-mark Descriptive Paper in English, to be completed in 30 minutes, in addition to the 200-mark objective portion. Skipping preparation for this section is one of the most common (and avoidable) mistakes candidates make.

Which Section Actually Decides the Merit Rank in IBPS SO Law Officer Exam?

  • In the Main Exam, English, Reasoning, and General Awareness are qualifying sections only.
  • Your final merit rank depends completely on your Professional Knowledge score.
  • Therefore, while you do need to clear the cut-offs in every section, your significant focus should be on Professional Knowledge.

This is exactly why candidates who treat Professional Knowledge as "just another section" tend to underperform relative to their overall preparation level.

If you're mapping out a study plan, our guide on how to prepare for the IBPS SO Law Officer exam breaks this down section by section.

Is There Negative Marking in the IBPS SO Law Officer Exam?

Yes. There's a penalty for wrong answers in both Prelims and Mains objective sections.

  • 0.25 marks deducted for every wrong answer
  • No penalty for questions you leave unattempted

This is a standard IBPS rule, but it changes how you should approach guesswork. If you can't eliminate at least two options confidently, it's often smarter to skip the question than to guess randomly across four sections.

What is the Weightage of Interview in the IBPS SO Law Officer Selection Process?

Once you clear Mains, you're called for an interview conducted by the participating bank and coordinated by the Nodal Bank in your state or region.

  • Total marks: 100
  • Minimum qualifying score: 40% for General/EWS candidates, 35% for SC/ST/OBC/PwBD candidates
  • Weightage in final merit: Mains and Interview are combined in an 80:20 ratio

What Happens After the Interview?

  • Candidates who clear both the Main Exam and the Interview are ranked on a combined merit list.
  • Based on this list and the actual vacancies reported by each participating bank, IBPS provisionally allots candidates to one of the banks, keeping reservation norms and candidate preferences in mind.
  • This allotment is provisional, not a confirmed offer.
  • Banks can still verify your documents and eligibility before finalizing your appointment, so keep your paperwork ready well before your interview date.
  • You can track your IBPS SO Law Officer result and subsequent allotment updates directly from the official portal once declared.
