Overview: If you’re planning your career as Civil Judge in Gujarat in 2026, you must first confirm whether you meet the Gujarat Judiciary eligibility criteria.

  • To apply for the post of Civil Judge (Junior Division) in Gujarat in 2026, you must be an Indian citizen, hold an LLB from a recognised university, be 21 to 35 years old (upper limit relaxed to 38 or 40 for eligible categories), and demonstrate proficiency in Gujarati.
  • If your law degree is from the academic year 2009-10 onwards, you must also have cleared the All-India Bar Examination (AIBE).
  • Most importantly: fresh law graduates can apply to the current cycle.

Here we give you all the necessary details about the eligibility criteria.

Gujarat Judiciary Eligibility Criteria 2026: Detailed Overview

If you want to appear for the Gujarat Judiciary Exam 2026, you must meet the eligibility conditions mentioned below:

Criteria Requirement
Nationality Must be a citizen of India
Educational Qualification LLB from a recognised university; AIBE cleared if degree is from 2009-10 onwards
Age Limit 21 to 35 years (General); relaxations up to 38/40 years for eligible categories
Language Proficiency in Gujarati (studied in Class 10/12 or pass the proficiency test)
3-Year Practice Rule Not applicable to the 2026 notification - fresh graduates can apply
Other Basic computer knowledge; valid category/relaxation certificates where claimed

Nationality

To be eligible, the candidate must be a citizen of India. This is a standard requirement across all state judicial services and ensures that only Indian nationals are considered for judicial appointments.

Candidates from other states can apply, provided they meet the Gujarati-language requirement.

Educational Qualification

What are educational qualifications required to become a civil judge in Gujarat? A law degree is mandatory. The detailed requirements are:

  • The candidate must possess a degree in law (LL.B.) from any university or institution recognised by the Government of India or established by law in India.
  • The degree should be obtained on or before the application deadline to be eligible.
  • For candidates who obtained their law degree in or after the academic year 2009-10, it is mandatory to have cleared the All-India Bar Examination (AIBE), confirming they are legally certified to practise law in India.
  • Candidates in the final year of law or awaiting results are not eligible unless they complete all degree requirements before the last date of Gujarat Judiciary application submission.

Age Limit

To meet the Gujarat Judiciary eligibility criteria, you must be in the following category-wise age bracket. Age is calculated as on the cut-off date specified in the official notification.

Category Upper Age Limit
General 35 years
SC / ST / SEBC / EWS / PwBD 38 years (3-year relaxation)
Eligible in-service court/allied staff of Gujarat Up to 40 years (5-year relaxation)

The minimum age is 21 years.

Several categories are eligible for age relaxation:

  • Reserved Categories (SC/ST/SEBC/EWS/PwBD): An upper age relaxation of 3 years extends the maximum limit to 38 years.
  • Court Employees or Allied Department Workers: Candidates currently serving in a court or judicial/allied department in Gujarat are eligible for up to 5 years' relaxation, subject to a maximum of 40 years.

Note: Age relaxation is granted only on submission of valid, recognised proof or certificates at the time of application.

Gujarati Language Proficiency

Because the Gujarat Judicial Services involve day-to-day communication, case handling, and documentation in Gujarati, candidates must demonstrate adequate knowledge of the language.

The requirement is fulfilled if:

  • The candidate has studied Gujarati as a subject at the Secondary or Higher Secondary level (Class 10 or 12), or
  • The candidate passes a Gujarati language proficiency test conducted by the Gujarat High Court, as specified in the notification.

Failing the language requirement can lead to disqualification even after clearing the written stages, so treat it as a genuine eligibility gate, not a formality.

Gujarat Judiciary Eligibility for Experienced & Practicing Advocates

For the 2026 cycle, three years of practice is not a bar to entry. However, practising advocates and in-service legal professionals should note the following:

  • Practising advocates in civil and/or criminal courts in India are eligible to apply.
  • Candidates serving in a judicial or legal post in the Government of Gujarat (such as a law officer or legal assistant) recognised by the High Court may also be eligible.
  • Where practice or service is claimed, it must be valid as of the last date of online application.
  • Keep practice certificates, experience letters, or service records ready for document verification.
  • For 2026, both fresh graduates and experienced advocates can apply - the practice requirement becomes decisive only for future cycles notified under the new rule.

Does the 3-Year Practice Rule Apply to Gujarat Judiciary 2026?

No. not for the current cycle. The Gujarat High Court notified its 2026 Civil Judge vacancies (Advt. No. RC/0719/2026) under the earlier eligibility rules, so fresh law graduates can apply to this recruitment as long as they meet the age, degree, AIBE (where applicable), and Gujarati-language requirements.

Where does the 3-year practice rule come from?

The 3-year minimum practice requirement comes from the Supreme Court's judgment in All India Judges Association v. Union of India (decided 20 May 2025), which restored mandatory legal practice as a condition for appointment to Civil Judge (Junior Division).

Importantly, the Court applied it prospectively - to notifications issued after the judgment, not to cycles already notified under the older rules.

What this means for you?

If you do not yet have three years of practice, the 2026 Gujarat cycle may be one of your last windows to enter the judiciary under the older criteria. Future Gujarat notifications are expected to carry the 3-year requirement, in line with the Supreme Court's direction. Prepare for this Gujarat Civil judge exam seriously for this attempt if you are eligible now.

Remember, the final decision on eligibility will depend on the next official notification by Gujarat HC that’s still awaited.

Here are the key takeaways for Gujarat Judiciary 2026 eligibility:

  • Fresh graduates can apply to the 2026 cycle - the 3-year practice rule does not apply to this notification.
  • You need an LLB from a recognised university, and AIBE clearance if your degree is from 2009-10 onward.
  • The age band is 21-35 years, with relaxations up to 38/40 for eligible categories.
  • Gujarati proficiency is a genuine eligibility gate.
  • The Gujarat High Court has notified approximately 237 vacancies (Advt. RC/0719/2026), subject to revision.
