Overview: If you're aiming for the post of Assistant Prosecution Officer (APO) in Uttar Pradesh, the most important first step is to understand the UP APO exam pattern 2026.

  • The UP APO 2026 selection process consists of 3 stages: Prelims, Mains, and Interview.
  • UP APO Prelims exam will be an objective-type, pen-and-paper-based test (150 marks).
  • The main exam will include 6 descriptive, written papers (total 500 marks) for the various subjects mentioned in the syllabus.
  • The interview carries 50 marks. The final merit list will be based on the mains exam and interview performance. Prelim is only qualifying in nature.

Let's dive deeper into the details!

UP APO Exam Pattern 2026 (Prelims & Mains)

If you're preparing for the UP APO exam 2026, it's important to understand the exam pattern first.

You should know the exact structure: marks, duration, negative marking, and paper-wise weightage before you open a single book.

An important aspect of this recruitment cycle is the shift to the new criminal laws (BNS, BNSS, and BSA) replacing the older IPC, CrPC, and Evidence Act across both Prelims and Mains.

Let's understand the UP APO exam pattern for both prelims and mains in detail.

UP APO Prelims Exam Pattern 2026

The Preliminary exam is an objective-type (MCQ-based) screening test. It does not contribute to your final merit, but you must clear the cut-off to advance to Mains.

It consists of two parts:

Part

Subject

Marks

Questions

Duration

Part I

General Knowledge

Part II

Law

Here are the rules regarding negative marking in the prelims exam:

  • 0.33 marks deducted for every incorrect answer
  • No penalty for questions left unattempted
  • If a candidate marks more than one answer for a question, it is treated as wrong, even if one of the marked options is correct

Note: Do not take the negative marking lightly; three wrong answers cancel out one correct answer's worth of marks.

UP APO Mains Exam Pattern 2026

Candidates who clear the prelims are eligible to appear for the mains. As per the UP APO exam pattern 2026, the mains consist of 6 descriptive papers.

This phase carries a total of 500 marks. Let's understand the subject-wise marks distribution.

Unlike Prelims, every mark scored in Mains counts toward your final merit. Notice that law-based papers (Criminal Law & Procedure, Sakshya Adhiniyam, and Anya Adhiniyam) carry 300 of the 500 Mains marks.

That's 60% of the written exam weightage sitting in legal subjects alone.

However, do not ignore the other subjects as they can help you attain a better overall score.

Qualifying Marks:

 40% for General/OBC candidates.

 35% for SC/ST candidates.

The final merit list is prepared from Mains (500 marks) + Interview (50 marks) only

UP APO Interview Pattern 2026: Final Stage Details

The interview is the final stage of the selection process. It is not just about your academic knowledge, but also about how well you present yourself as a future officer of the state.

Total Marks: 50.

Focus Areas:

  • Depth of legal knowledge.
  • General awareness of current events.
  • Personality and communication skills.
  • Physical and mental fitness.

The final merit list is prepared based on Mains (500 marks) + Interview (50 marks). The Prelims exam is not counted in the final merit, it’s only for screening.

UP APO Selection Ratio 2026: Prelims to Interview Shortlisting

One of the unique features of the UP APO Exam Pattern 2026 is the way candidates are shortlisted at each stage, it is mainly based on number of UP APO vacancy announced:

From Prelims to Mains: About 13 times the number of vacancies are selected.

From Mains to Interview: About 2 times as many vacancies are called.

For example, if there are 182 vacancies in 2026, nearly 2,366 candidates may be shortlisted for Mains, and around 364 candidates may reach the interview stage.
