Overview: The law officer vacancies for 2026 are out. Before you start preparing it's important you understand the IBPS SO law officer syllabus.

  • The IBPS SO law officer exam tests GA, English Language, Reasoning, and Professional Knowledge.
  • The Mains exam too has four sections now, with a descriptive English Language test.

In this blog we give you the detailed syllabus and sub-topic you should prepare for prelims & mains. Let's begin!

IBPS SO Law Officer Syllabus 2026 for Prelims

This year the IBPS SO law officer exam prelims has four sections: English Language, General Awareness, Reasoning, and Professional Knowledge.

Here's the detailed syllabus for preliminary exam:

Subject

Topics

English Language

Reading Comprehension, Fill in the Blanks, Cloze Test, Para jumbles, Tenses, Rules of Grammar, Vocabulary, Sentence Completion, Error Spotting, Sentence Improvement

Reasoning

Data Sufficiency, Alphanumeric Series, Coded Inequalities, Puzzles, Directions, Tabulation, Logical Reasoning, Syllogism, Coding-Decoding, Seating Arrangement, Blood Relations, Input-Output

General Awareness

Current Affairs, Financial Awareness, Banking Awareness, Banking Terminologies, Static Awareness, Principles of Insurance

Professional Knowledge

Foundational legal concepts overlapping with Mains — Indian Contract Act basics, Negotiable Instruments Act, Banking Regulation Act, and constitutional provisions relevant to banking

English Language

A solid command of English matters here, and the section rewards accuracy over speed for most candidates:

  • Reading Comprehension: Passages followed by questions testing your ability to interpret written information.
  • Cloze Test: A passage with blanks where you select the contextually correct word. It tests vocabulary and comprehension together, not just grammar in isolation.
  • Para Jumbles: Rearranging scrambled sentences into a coherent paragraph. It’s a logical sequencing skill as much as a language one.

Reasoning

This section measures logical and analytical thinking, and puzzles/seating arrangement questions typically consume the most time relative to their mark value. Practice these for speed specifically, not just accuracy.

  • Data Sufficiency: Determining whether given data is adequate to answer a question, without solving it fully.
  • Coded Inequalities: Deriving relationships (e.g., if A > B and B < C, what's the relation between A and C?). It’s a pattern-based skill that improves quickly with repetition.

General Awareness

Since this section leans specifically toward banking, generic current-affairs reading isn't enough on its own.

  • Banking Terminologies: Terms like NEFT, RTGS, and Repo Rate come as direct, high-frequency questions.
  • Financial Awareness: Fiscal policy and budget-related developments, tracked over the months leading up to your exam.

For the full current affairs strategy and a month-by-month study plan for this section, see our dedicated General Awareness guide.

Professional Knowledge

This section is worth 50 of the 125 Prelims marks, more than any other section.

It draws on the same foundational legal areas that carry into Mains: The Indian Contract Act, Negotiable Instruments Act, Banking Regulation Act, and constitutional provisions with banking relevance.

Treat your Prelims Professional Knowledge prep as the first layer of your Mains prep, not a separate, smaller effort.

IBPS SO Law Officer Syllabus 2026 for Mains

In this section we have covered the Professional Knowledge syllabus specifically, since that's the subject unique to Law Officer prep and the one you need detailed topic guidance for.

Professional Knowledge Topic

Syllabus Coverage

Banking Regulations

Legal framework of the banking sector; role of regulatory bodies

Consumer Protection Act

Consumer protection laws; Banking Ombudsman Scheme

Debt Recovery & Assets Securitisation

Debt Recovery Tribunals (DRT) Act; SARFAESI Act

Compliance & Legal Aspects

Compliance and legal aspects of banking operations

Negotiable Instruments, Securities & Forex

Key legal provisions relating to negotiable instruments, securities, and foreign exchange

Bankers' Book Evidence Act

Overview and application in banking disputes

Prevention of Money-Laundering

Anti-Money Laundering (PMLA) laws; KYC norms

Limitation Act

Application and significance in banking law

Other Banking-related Laws

Additional legal provisions relevant to banking, including FEMA

Banking Regulations

These regulations keep the banking system stable and protect stakeholder interests, and questions here tend to test applied understanding rather than pure recall.

  • Capital Adequacy Standards: the reserve levels banks are required to maintain
  • KYC Norms: mechanisms specifically aimed at preventing fraud and money laundering

Consumer Protection Act

This directly shapes the bank-customer relationship, which makes it a recurring theme across both objective questions and, potentially, your Descriptive Paper if a scenario-based question comes up.

  • Right to Safety: financial products shouldn't carry undisclosed risk
  • Right to Information: clear disclosure of terms and conditions on financial products

Laws Directly Linked to the Banking Sector

  • The Negotiable Instruments Act: governs cheques, bills of exchange, and similar instruments.
  • The Banking Regulation Act: governs bank licensing, establishment, and day-to-day operations.

The Other Four Mains Sections

Beyond Professional Knowledge, Mains also tests:

  • English Language: 30 questions, similar format to Prelims but with a longer duration
  • Reasoning: 40 questions, the highest question count of any Mains section
  • General Awareness: 30 questions, same banking-focused syllabus as Prelims, tested in greater depth
  • Descriptive Paper (English): 2 questions worth 25 marks (essay/letter/précis format), often the single most under-prepared section on the entire paper

Note: Only Professional Knowledge counts toward your final merit rank; the rest are qualifying sections you still need to clear.

For the complete marks and timing breakdown across all five sections, see the IBPS SO law officer exam pattern 2026

How to Prepare for the Exam According to IBPS SO Law Syllabus 2026?

Here are a few quick IBPS SO law officer preparation tips we have for you:

Prioritize by Weightage

A syllabus map is only useful if it changes how you allocate time. Since Professional Knowledge carries the highest marks at both Prelims and Mains, it should get the most focus during your study hours.

Use your syllabus checklist to identify weak spots within Professional Knowledge specifically, since that's where marks are concentrated.

Time Management

Given the syllabus breadth, block dedicated time for each section weekly rather than studying reactively.

Complex, high-weightage topics like the Negotiable Instruments Act or SARFAESI provisions deserve more scheduled time than lighter static-GK topics.

Mock Tests and Sectional Practice

Full-length mocks tell you your overall readiness; sectional tests tell you exactly where you're losing marks.

If your Professional Knowledge mock scores stay consistently weaker than your other sections, that's a clear, fixable signal to revisit specific Acts rather than restudying the whole syllabus generically.

Stay Updated on Banking and Legal Affairs

The General Awareness section draws on recent banking-sector developments, and Professional Knowledge occasionally tests awareness of recent regulatory amendments too.

A recent Consumer Protection Act amendment, for instance, could show up as a current-affairs question and a Professional Knowledge scenario question.

Use the Best Books and Resources

Quality resources aligned to this exact syllabus save significant prep time compared to generic banking-exam material.

See our detailed IBPS SO Law Officer Books 2026 guide for specific title recommendations, including Bare Acts for Professional Knowledge and a dedicated Descriptive Paper resource.

Use Previous Year Papers to Understand Topic-wise Weightage

Rather than guessing which syllabus topics matter most, the most reliable method is going straight to the source: previous year papers.

For a structured breakdown of this approach, see our IBPS SO Law Officer Previous Year Question Papers guide, which covers how to analyse past papers section by section rather than just solving them for practice.

If you'd rather work from ready-made notes instead of building your own from this syllabus map, our IBPS SO Law Officer Notes page has subject-wise material for both stages.

Here are the key takeaways:

  • Prelims has 4 sections (English, Reasoning, GA, Professional Knowledge). Professional Knowledge alone is worth 50 of 125 marks.
  • The Mains "syllabus" most guides show you is just the Professional Knowledge syllabus. Mains also includes English, Reasoning, GA, and a 25-mark Descriptive Paper.
  • Don't split study time equally across sections. Prioritize Professional Knowledge, since it carries the most weight and is the only section that decides your final merit rank in Mains.
  • Update any criminal-law references from IPC/CrPC/Evidence Act to BNS/BNSS/BSA.
  • Use previous year papers, not guesswork, to identify which specific Acts and topics recur most often.
  • Sectional mock tests reveal exactly where you're losing marks. Use that data to guide revision, not a blanket "study more" approach.
