UCEED and NID DAT are both national B.Des entrance exams - the core difference is format and focus. UCEED (by IIT Bombay) is a computer-based, aptitude-heavy exam (Part A objective + Part B drawing) leading to B.Des at the IITs and IIITDM Jabalpur.

NID DAT (by NID) is drawing and studio-focused. Specially since 2026, as its Prelims has become CAT-only (drawing/design thinking) and qualifier-only, with admission decided in a hands-on Mains Studio Test.

Choose UCEED if you're strong in reasoning and want a tech-leaning design education at an IIT; choose NID if you're hands-on, sketch-driven, and want an immersive design-studio culture.

Key Highlights: UCEED vs NID

  • Conducted by: UCEED - IIT Bombay | NID DAT - National Institute of Design.
  • Leads to: Both → B.Des (NID also offers M.Des; UCEED is UG only).
  • Format: UCEED - CBT aptitude (Part A) + drawing (Part B) | NID - CAT-only Prelims (2026) + hands-on Mains Studio Test.
  • NID 2026 change: GAT removed; Prelims is qualifier-only (0% weightage) - Mains decides admission.
  • Stream: All streams eligible for both; UCEED restricts non-PCM students to some institutes.
  • Best for: UCEED → analytical/tech-leaning aspirants | NID → hands-on, studio-driven aspirants.

UCEED vs NID: Exam Pattern 2027

Both the UCEED and NID entrance exams have two stages explained in detail. Know the exam pattern to obtain better UCEED marks.

UCEED Exam Pattern 2027

UCEED is a computer-based test, and the exam paper is divided into two parts, Part A and Part B.

Part A (Computer-Based):

  • NAT (Numerical Answer Type):
  • MSQ (Multiple Select Questions)
  • MCQ (Multiple Choice Questions)

Refer to the table given below to understand a detailed overview of these three sections of Part A:

Section Type No. of Questions Marks (Correct) Negative Marks (Wrong) Total Marks
1 NAT (Numerical Answer Type) 14 +4 0 56
2 MSQ (Multiple Select Question) 15 Partial marking -1 (in all other cases) 60
3 MCQ (Multiple Choice Question) 28 +3 -0.71 84
Total 57 200

Check: Detailed UCEED 2027 Exam Pattern

Part B:

A 1 hour, 100 marks, offline pen-paper based section of the UCEED exam:

  • Sketching: 1 question (50 marks)
  • Design Aptitude: 1 question (50 marks)
  • Answers are written/drawn in the answer book provided by the invigilator.

NID Exam Pattern 2027:

The National Institute of Design Entrance Exam is conducted in two stages:

  • NID DAT Prelims
  • NID DAT Mains

The very first stage is the NID DAT Prelims exam, which might include either GAT + CAT or only CAT (just like in 2026). Either way preparing well for NID CAT drawing questions is a must.

The second stage is the Mains examination for aspirants who pass the first stage of prelims. This exam is of total 100 marks consists of a few practical tests such as drawing/sketching, group sessions, model-making, AV observation rounds and presentations.

Until 2025, the weightage distribution of Prelims & Mains in the making of final merit list has been in the ratio of 30:70 respectively.

In 2026, NID declared Prelims as a qualifier only round for DAT Mains, which means 0% weightage of DAT Prelims score in final NID result.

Is UCEED tougher than NID?

Both UCEED and NID exams have different formats and assess the candidates differently. While NID DAT evaluates creativity, drawing/sketching skills, visualization and design thinking in candidates, UCEED is more tech + design focused with more questions and emphasis on numerical ability and analytical ability. Therefore, the difficulty level for each exam can vary with individual to individual depending on their strengths and weaknesses.

  • Students who are not much comfortable with drawing, may find subjective and drawing-heavy NID exam tougher than UCEED
  • Others who don't have strong quantitative and reasoning aptitude may find UCEED more challenging than NID.

UCEED vs NID Exam Syllabus for 2027

Many students have the question- Is NID & UCEED Syllabus same?

The short answer: No, the NID syllabus and UCEED syllabus are not exactly the same, though there are overlapping areas like observation, visualization and creative thinking - but they weight them differently.

UCEED leans toward analytical aptitude plus a drawing task, while NID (since its recent shift to a CAT-only Prelims) leans almost entirely toward drawing, observation and design thinking. Here's how the two syllabi compared, area by area:

UCEED Syllabus vs NID Syllabus: Side-by-Side Comparison

Skill Area

UCEED (IIT Bombay)

NID DAT (National Institute of Design)

Visualization & Spatial Ability

Core focus - 3D rotation, spatial reasoning and figure interpretation in Part A

Tested through drawing, scene creation and perspective questions in CAT

Observation & Design Sensitivity

Assessed via objective questions on everyday design and detail

Central to CAT - how attentively you notice people, objects and spaces

Creativity & Ideation

Tested in Part B through a single drawing/design question

The heart of the exam - storyboarding, imaginative composition and original ideas

Drawing & Sketching

Two Part B UCEED questions (sketching + design aptitude)

The entire Prelims - multiple drawing tasks and sub-questions

Analytical & Logical Reasoning

Significant weight - series, patterns, coding, visual reasoning in Part A

Was part of the old GAT section; not tested in the recent CAT-only Prelims

Design & General Awareness (GK)

Design sensitivity, environmental and cultural awareness in Part A

Was a GAT area (art, crafts, designers); now surfaces mainly in the Mains interview

Language & Communication

Basic comprehension and language questions in Part A (very less frequent)

Not directly tested in the CAT-only Prelims; clarity of idea matters more

Design Thinking & Problem-Solving

Applied in Part B design tasks

Emphasized throughout CAT and the hands-on Mains Studio Test

Primary focus overall

Analytical + creative balance, with strong reasoning weight

Creativity, observation and hands-on design ability

Quick takeaway: if your strength is reasoning and structured problem-solving, UCEED's syllabus plays to it; if your strength is drawing, observation and idea generation, NID's CAT-focused syllabus suits you better. The shared foundation - visualization, observation and creative thinking - means preparing for one meaningfully helps with the other.

Note: NID removed the GAT (reasoning, GK, maths, English) section from Prelims in 2026, making it CAT-only and qualifier-only. NID hasn't confirmed whether GAT returns, so treat those areas as contingency prep. Always confirm the current syllabus on the official sites - uceed.iitb.ac.in and nid.edu.

UCEED 2026 Cut-Off: Institute-Wise Closing Ranks (Final Round)

The table below shows the opening and closing ranks from the UCEED 2026 B.Des final seat allotment (Round 5, 9 July 2026) - the official IIT Bombay data. Use it as a realistic benchmark for the rank you'll need in 2027.

How to read it? Open ranks are All India Ranks (AIR); EWS, OBC-NCL, SC and ST ranks are category ranks; PwD ranks are within each category. "Closing rank" is the last rank admitted in that category at that institute.

Source: UCEED 2026 B.Des Seat Allotment, Round 5 (final), IIT Bombay uceed.iitb.ac.in. Ranks are the last admitted in each category and shift year to year with applicant numbers and difficulty; treat 2026 as a guide for 2027, not a guarantee.

What the 2026 trend tells you:

IIT Bombay remains the most competitive (Open closes at AIR 16), followed by Delhi and Hyderabad, while IIITDM Jabalpur has the widest intake and the most forgiving closing rank (Open ~171). So an Open rank inside the top ~30 keeps the top IITs realistic, while a rank up to ~170 can still secure a B.Des seat through UCEED.

Check: Salary after NID

UCEED vs NID Salary - Career Outcomes

Both lead to a B.Des and similar design careers (UX/UI, product, communication, interaction design). Placements depend far more on your portfolio and specialization than on which exam you took.

IIT-based (UCEED) programs often have strong tech-industry and campus-placement exposure; NID's design-focused studios and long-standing industry network are especially valued in core design and studio roles.

Treat any specific salary figure with caution- entry pay varies widely by city, role and portfolio strength. (See salary after NID for indicative ranges.)

UCEED vs NID: Conclusion

UCEED and NID are two popular exams for aspiring design students.

Though both of these entrance exams offer students a great opportunity to pursue a degree in design, there is a substantial difference between NID and UCEED scope, structure and focus.

Therefore, before taking these exams, students must take into account all criteria, including the number of seats available, the cost, the calibre of the education, placement, NID & UCEED marks vs rank, placement opportunities and so on.
