NID Syllabus 2027: DAT Prelims & Mains Topics + PDF

NID does not publish an official syllabus. But the NID DAT syllabus for 2027 can be derived from previous-year papers and covers two stages- DAT Prelims and DAT Mains, for both B.Des and M.Des.

Since the 2026 cycle, NID Prelims is CAT-only (offline, 100 marks, no negative marking) - focused on drawing tasks like scene creation, perspective, storyboarding, product redesign, observation and design thinking - and it is now a qualifying round only (0% weightage).

Till 2025, along with drawing, there was an objective GAT section as well (reasoning, GK, aptitude). But it was completely removed in 2026. However, NID exam is highly unpredictable and GAT might reappear in future attempts.

DAT Mains - the Studio Test plus In-person Sensitivity Test (B.Des/Integrated) or Studio Test + Interview (M.Des) - now carries 100% of the final NID merit. In short, prepare CAT-heavy on the NID exam syllabus, with only light aptitude awareness.

New for NID DAT 2027: 5.5 Year Integrated M.Des (after 12th)

NID now offer another undergraduate route for design aspirants apart from regular 4 year B.Des - the 5.5 year Integrated M.Des (admission after 12th and degree offered is direct M.Des). 

For the syllabus, it changes very little. The Integrated Pathway aspirants will appear for the same CAT-first DAT Prelims and follows the B.Des Mains format (Studio Sensitivity + In-Person Sensitivity Test). Prepare one CAT-first Prelims plan for all routes; tailor only your Mains rehearsal - an interview (M.Des) versus an in-person sensitivity test (B.Des/Integrated).

What is NID Syllabus 2027? - B.Des 

The Prelims is a pen-and-paper (offline) test held at designated NID exam centers across India, while the Mains stage includes components like the Studio Test and/or Interview.

What is NID Entrance Exam Syllabus 2027? - M.Des

M.Des Prelims is a single common paper (a qualifier), with the same core CAT skills as B.Des but judged on greater design maturity - problem framing, user thinking and conceptual rigour.

Your chosen discipline is tested at Mains (a group-wise Studio Test plus a discipline-wise Interview), not through a separate Prelims sub-test. You may apply to up to three disciplines under NID's group rules. Practice with NID sample papers and NID previous year question papers to gauge difficulty.
