The NID DAT Prelims 2027 is expected to be held around December 2026 to January 2027. Admission counselling for B.Des takes place mid year usually.
To get admitted, interested applicants must complete the following steps:
NID Ahmedabad admission is a two-stage exam- Prelims (qualifying; marks not carried forward) and Mains.
For B.Des, Mains is a Studio Sensitivity Test (60%) and In-Person Sensitivity Test (40%). For M.Des, Mains is a Studio Test (40%) and Interview (60%). NID does not run a separate portfolio-review stage as part of DAT scoring.
Shortlisted candidates from the DAT are invited to appear for the Studio Test and Interview round. This stage assesses the candidate's hands-on design skills, conceptual thinking, and ability to articulate their ideas.
Final Merit List: Based on the performance in the DAT, studio Test, personal interview, and portfolio review, a final merit list is prepared. Passed applicants are offered admission to their preferred program based on their rank in the merit list.
To apply for the desired course in online mode, follow the step-wise NID Ahmedabad application process given below:
Candidates must meet the following criteria to be considered for admission to the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad:
Candidates should check the official National Institute of Design Ahmedabad website for the most recent information, as these NID eligibility requirements are subject to change.
NID Ahmedabad doesn't publish a single fixed cut-off - it varies each year by discipline and category, based on the number of seats and applicant performance in the DAT.
Competitive disciplines like Product Design and Graphic Design (19 seats each) typically demand higher scores than smaller-cohort disciplines. For category-wise trends, see our NID DAT cut-off guide.
To ensure that all applicants have a fair chance at receiving a high-quality education, the NID Ahmedabad fees have been kept affordable.

Hostel fees at NID Ahmedabad is approximately ₹15,000 per semester (room rent), excluding mess charges, which are notified at the start of each academic year. Allotment is annual, on single or shared occupancy.
NID Ahmedabad offers a merit-linked Freeship-cum-scholarship. As per the official fee notification, students securing a rank of 60 or above are eligible, with scholarship amounts ranging roughly ₹30,000-₹50,000 per year (some reports describe a freeship covering up to one year's tuition for top rank-holders).
Students may additionally avail central and state government scholarships and fee waivers for SC/ST/OBC categories. The historically cited Sir Ratan Tata Trust scholarship has also supported a small number of exceptional students.
The NID has a very strong placement track record. Discipline-wise NID placement drives are conducted for its Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, and Gandhinagar campuses.
Recent cycles saw highest packages in the ₹30-36 LPA range and roughly 80% of participating students placed, with recruiter participation around 120-150 companies. Figures vary year to year; refer to NID's official annual report for exact numbers.
During the National Institute of Design Ahmedabad 2024 placement drive, Microsoft offered jobs to around 30 students.
Recruitment has occurred in experimental design, universal design, social communication, service industries, enhanced learning, craft design, green design, etc.
In recent years, NID Ahmedabad placements' top recruiters include Wipro, Whirlpool India Ltd., VIP Industries Ltd, Trident Group, Titan Industries, Toshiba, Philips, etc.

If NID Ahmedabad is your target, three moves matter more than anything else right now.
Pick your discipline before you pick "NID." The 13-seat disciplines (Exhibition, Ceramic & Glass, Furniture & Interior) clear at lower DAT scores than the 19-seat ones (Product, Graphic, Animation, Textile) - but you only reach discipline allotment after the Foundation year, so your DAT rank and stated preference decide everything. Rank your preferences by genuine interest and seat availability, not prestige.
Use the December-to-June gap deliberately. DAT Prelims (December) and B.Des counselling (June) are six months apart. Prelims is qualifying only - nothing carries forward - so the moment Prelims ends, shift fully to Studio Sensitivity and In-Person Sensitivity practice, which is where the actual 60/40 scoring happens.
Budget for the real number. Plan for roughly ₹19 lakh over four years plus mess, not the older ~₹16 lakh figure floating around - and if rank ≤60 is realistic for you, factor in the Scholarship when comparing NID against a cheaper newer campus.
The honest takeaway- at 128 seats, NID Ahmedabad rewards students who target a specific discipline early and treat NID DAT Mains - not Prelims - as the real exam.
