Bachelor of Design (B.Des)

Master of Design (M.Des.)

The Master of Design (M.Des.) is a two-and-a-half-year full-time postgraduate program. It allows for advanced specialization in particular design fields. 

NID's M.Des is offered across five faculty streams:

• Communication Design
• Industrial Design
• IT-Integrated Design
• Interdisciplinary Design Studies, and
• Textile, Apparel & Lifestyle Accessory Design

NID Ahmedabad Admission Process 2027

The NID DAT Prelims 2027 is expected to be held around December 2026 to January 2027. Admission counselling for B.Des takes place mid year usually. 

To get admitted, interested applicants must complete the following steps: 

Step-1: NID Design Aptitude Test (DAT)

NID Ahmedabad admission is a two-stage exam- Prelims (qualifying; marks not carried forward) and Mains.

For B.Des, Mains is a Studio Sensitivity Test (60%) and In-Person Sensitivity Test (40%). For M.Des, Mains is a Studio Test (40%) and Interview (60%). NID does not run a separate portfolio-review stage as part of DAT scoring.

Step-2: Studio Test and Interview

Shortlisted candidates from the DAT are invited to appear for the Studio Test and Interview round. This stage assesses the candidate's hands-on design skills, conceptual thinking, and ability to articulate their ideas. 

Final Merit List: Based on the performance in the DAT, studio Test, personal interview, and portfolio review, a final merit list is prepared. Passed applicants are offered admission to their preferred program based on their rank in the merit list.

NID Ahmedabad Eligibility Criteria 2027

Candidates must meet the following criteria to be considered for admission to the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad:  

Bachelor of Design (B.Des.)  

• Must have passed or sat in their 10+2 (or equivalent) examination from any recognized board in India or overseas.  
• For B.Des 2026-27, General and GEN-EWS candidates must be born on or after 1 July 2006; OBC-NCL, SC, and ST candidates on or after 1 July 2003; and PwD candidates on or after 1 July 2001. Eligibility is defined by date of birth, not a fixed age cap.

Master of Design (M.Des.)  

• Must have a bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification in design, engineering, architecture, or a related discipline from a recognized university/institute.  
• There is no upper age limit for M.Des admissions.

Hostel Fees:

Hostel fees at NID Ahmedabad is approximately ₹15,000 per semester (room rent), excluding mess charges, which are notified at the start of each academic year. Allotment is annual, on single or shared occupancy.

Scholarships:

NID Ahmedabad offers a merit-linked Freeship-cum-scholarship. As per the official fee notification, students securing a rank of 60 or above are eligible, with scholarship amounts ranging roughly ₹30,000-₹50,000 per year (some reports describe a freeship covering up to one year's tuition for top rank-holders).
