In case of NID M.Des:

• You need to appear for NID DAT Prelims for only one discipline. This exam comprises CAT and discipline-specific tests. The total duration of DAT Prelims is 2.5 hours.
• If you have applied for two disciplines, you must appear for NID DAT Prelims comprising CAT and two discipline-specific tests. The total duration of DAT Prelims will be 4.5 hours (30 minutes for CAT and 2 hours for each discipline-specific test).

The NID DAT structure carries forward the big 2026 reset, with one new structural change on top. Here's what's actually different for 2027 aspirants:

1. A new undergraduate route - the Integrated Pathway

The single biggest change isn't inside the paper, it's what you're applying to. At NID Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar and Bengaluru, undergraduate entry is now the 5.5-year Integrated Pathway (M.Des), not a standalone B.Des.

For exam-pattern purposes it follows the B.Des Mains format (Studio Sensitivity + In-Person Sensitivity Test). The 4-year B.Des continues at NID Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Haryana and Madhya Pradesh.

2. Prelims stays a qualifier (0% weight)

As in 2026, DAT Prelims only shortlists you for Mains - its marks are not carried into the final merit list. Your rank is decided entirely by DAT Mains.

3. Mains shortlisting ratios are confirmed

NID calls 2.5× the seats per category for B.Des and the Integrated Pathway, and 4.5× per category, per discipline for the 2.5-year M.Des.

4. Prelims remains CAT-focused - but treat GAT as possible

The 2026 paper was CAT-only (drawing and design-thinking tasks). NID declares no fixed pattern, so GAT could reappear; prepare CAT-first and keep light GAT readiness as insurance.

What is the NID M.Des Exam Pattern? (Updated with Latest Changes)

The NID 2027 M.Des exam pattern has also been updated, and these changes are important for every aspirant.

Here’s what you need to know in simple words:

1. Prelims is only a shortlisting round

Similar to updated B.Des NID pattern, for M.Des also, prelims is just the first filter. Its score will not be counted in the final admission. Your goal in Prelims is simply to score high enough to get shortlisted for Mains.

2. Limited number of students shortlisted

About 4.5 times the number of seats in each category will be invited to Mains. 

3. DAT Mains has two parts with fixed weightage

1. NID DAT Prelims

Since now Prelims score is only for shortlisting, you must clear the shortlisting cut-off to get to Mains. For B.Des that shortlist is 1.5× seats per category. Your preparation strategy should be planned accordingly. Here's what experts suggest:
