Weightage of Prelims & Mains in NID DAT Result (2026)

According to the NID Admission Handbook 2026-27 and other official notifications, the selection process for both B.Des and M.Des programmes has been revised. Notably:

  • The DAT Prelims score will now be used only for shortlisting candidates for the Mains stage.
  • The Prelims marks will no longer carry forward into the final merit list.
  • Final ranking will be based primarily on scores in the DAT Mains (Studio Test and Interview), as applicable.

Here’s the updated pattern of weightage:

Programme

Prelims Weightage in Final Merit

Mains Weightage in Final Merit

Notes

B.Des

0% (Prelims used only for shortlisting)

100% (Mains + Studio Test)

Prelim performance determines eligibility only.

M.Des

0% (Prelims used only for shortlisting)

100% (Studio Test + Interview + Portfolio)

Final ranking based solely on Mains components.

Key takeaway: For NID DAT result 2026, the Prelims stage is a qualifier, not a contributor to the final merit score.

Implications for Aspirants

  • A strong performance in Prelims remains crucial - it determines whether you qualify for the Mains.
  • However, since Prelims marks are not considered in the final merit list, the true determinant of admission is how you perform in the Mains (studio test and interview/portfolio).
  • Preparation focus should therefore shift: Do well enough in Prelims to get shortlisted, and then prioritise mastering the Mains components for the final merit.
  • Aspirants should plan their timing and preparation accordingly; early practice for studio-test tasks, hands-on model making, sketching, and presentation will matter more than chasing high Prelims scores.

What Is Checked During Rechecking?

When you apply for rechecking, NID verifies:

  1. Whether all questions have been evaluated.
  2. Whether all marks awarded by evaluators are correctly totalled.
  3. Whether marks are accurately transferred to the online result system.

No further review or discussion of subjective marks (in creative or design-based questions) is permitted.

Timeline and Communication of Rechecking NID Result

  • The rechecking result is usually declared within 2-3 weeks after the rechecking window closes.
  • Candidates are notified through the official website or email about the outcome.
  • If a discrepancy is found during verification, NID will correct the marks and update the NID 2026 result PDF accordingly.
  • The decision of NID after rechecking is final and binding on all candidates.

Important: No individual communication or detailed justification is provided - you’ll only be informed whether your score remains the same or has been revised.

Key Points to Remember

Do’s

Don’ts

Apply within the official deadline only.

Do not email or send physical applications - they will not be accepted.

Download acknowledgment receipt immediately after submission.

Don’t request for re-evaluation - it’s not allowed.

Pay the fee correctly; incomplete payment cancels your request.

Avoid multiple submissions for the same paper - one request per paper is accepted.

Why Rechecking Matters

Even though rare, clerical or totaling errors can occur during large-scale evaluation. The NID result 2026 rechecking process ensures every candidate’s marks are accurately calculated and recorded, promoting transparency and trust in the selection process.

For candidates close to the qualifying cut-off or shortlisting boundary, this process can be crucial - a small error correction can impact whether they move forward to the Mains or final merit list.

Final Note: If you have any doubt about your marks, apply within the official time window. But remember, no subjective re-evaluation will occur. Always refer to the official NID Admissions portal for dates, fee details, and the latest rechecking instructions.

NID Merit List 2026 - How It’s Prepared

The NID DAT result merit list 2026 ranks candidates based on:

  • Weighted score combining Prelims and Mains (as specified)
  • Category reservation rules applied. The NID DAT merit list is prepared category-wise; different lists are released for General, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, and PH category candidates.
  • Tie-breaker policy when needed
  • Only candidates who have completed all test components (Prelims, Studio/Portfolio, Interview) are included.

From the total number of applicants who have appeared for DAT, the number of candidates to be called for Stage 2 of the exam will be calculated as 1.5 N where ‘N’ stands for the number of seats in that category for that program or discipline.

The final merit list is what decides admission to the NID campuses.

Tie-Breaking Criteria for NID DAT 2026 Exam

The tie-breaker policy in NID DAT Prelims is applied when two or more candidates score the same total marks in the DAT Prelims.
To ensure fairness, NID follows a structured set of rules that prioritize performance in specific sections before other criteria like age or application number.

Below is the programme-wise tie-breaker policy for B.Des and M.Des as per the NID Admission Handbook 2026–27:

Tie-Breaker Policy for NID DAT Prelims - B.Des 2026

If two or more candidates obtain the same total marks in NID DAT Prelims, the following rules are applied in order:

Order of Preference

Tie-Breaking Criteria (B.Des Prelims)

1️⃣

Candidate with higher marks in Part B (Creative Ability Test) will be ranked higher.

2️⃣

If the tie persists, candidate with higher marks in Part A (General Ability Test) will be ranked higher.

3️⃣

If the tie still remains, the older candidate (by date of birth) will be given a higher rank.

Example: If two candidates score 70 marks each in total, the one with a higher Part B (Creative Aptitude) score will rank above the other.

Tie-Breaker Policy for NID DAT Prelims - M.Des 2026

For M.Des Prelims, where the paper may contain discipline-specific sections, the tie-breaker rules are slightly different.

Order of Preference

Tie-Breaking Criteria (M.Des Prelims)

1️⃣

Candidate with higher marks in the Discipline-Specific Section of the DAT Prelims will be ranked higher.

2️⃣

If the tie still remains, candidate with higher marks in the Common Section will be ranked higher.

3️⃣

If a tie persists even after this, the older candidate (by date of birth) will be given preference in ranking.

Note: In case two candidates have the same total score and identical sectional scores, the ranking will be determined by age - the elder candidate will be ranked higher.

Key Insight for Aspirants

  • The tie-breaker system prioritises creative and discipline-specific performance over general aptitude.
  • Hence, aspirants should focus on Part B in B.Des and discipline-oriented problem-solving in M.Des to gain an edge.
  • Age is used only as a final-level tiebreaker, ensuring transparency and fairness in ranking.

Check: NID Previous Year Question Papers with Solutions

Tie-Breaker Policy for NID DAT Mains - B.Des 2026

If two or more candidates achieve identical total scores in the final NID DAT B.Des result, the following rules are applied sequentially to determine ranking:

Order of Preference

Tie-Breaking Criteria (B.Des Final Merit)

1️⃣

Candidate with higher marks in the DAT Mains (Studio Test) will be ranked higher.

2️⃣

If the tie still remains, candidate with higher marks in the DAT Prelims Part B (Creative Ability Test) will be ranked higher.

3️⃣

If a tie persists, the candidate with higher marks in DAT Prelims Part A (General Ability Test) will be ranked higher.

4️⃣

If all above are identical, the older candidate (by date of birth) will be given preference in ranking.

Example: If two candidates both score 145/200 overall, but Candidate A scores 80 in Studio Test while Candidate B scores 78, Candidate A ranks higher.

Tie-Breaker Policy for NID DAT Mains - M.Des 2026

For the M.Des programme, where each discipline has its own Studio Test and Interview, NID follows a discipline-specific tie-breaker sequence.

Order of Preference

Tie-Breaking Criteria (M.Des Final Merit)

1️⃣

Candidate with higher marks in the DAT Mains (Studio Test + Interview) for that discipline will be ranked higher.

2️⃣

If a tie still exists, candidate with higher marks in the Discipline-Specific Section of the DAT Prelims will be ranked higher.

3️⃣

If still tied, candidate with higher marks in the Common Section of the DAT Prelims will be ranked higher.

4️⃣

If a tie persists after all above, the older candidate (by date of birth) will be ranked higher.

Example: If two M.Des candidates secure the same combined total, the one with better Studio Test + Interview performance will take precedence.

Key Takeaways for Aspirants

  • For both programmes, Mains performance carries the highest weight in resolving ties.
  • Creative ability (Part B for B.Des and discipline-specific section for M.Des) plays the next decisive role.
  • Age acts only as a final tie-breaker to maintain fairness in ranking.
  • Hence, to strengthen your position in NID 2026 result, focus on maximising Studio Test / Interview marks and discipline-specific clarity.

For NID DAT 2026, the minimum qualifying marks will be determined separately for Prelims and Mains for each category (General, EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, PwD).

How NID Determines Minimum Qualifying Marks

The NID Admissions Committee decides the qualifying marks each year based on:

  1. Overall Performance of Candidates – If the paper is difficult, cut-offs are lowered proportionally.
  2. Number of Test Takers – More candidates often lead to higher competition and a slightly higher qualifying range.
  3. Category Reservation Norms – Separate qualifying marks are fixed for each category in accordance with reservation guidelines.
  4. Seat Availability – In years where seats remain vacant, qualifying marks may be relaxed marginally.
  5. Statistical Normalization – In some cases, marks may be normalized across multiple test sessions (especially in M.Des).

Example: How Qualifying Criteria Work in Practice

Let’s say:

The General category qualifying mark for NID DAT Mains 2026 is 55%.

The total marks in Mains are 100.

Candidates scoring 55 marks or above will be included in the final merit list, while those below 55 will not be considered, even if they performed strongly in Prelims.

Similarly, for the Prelims stage, if the cut-off for General category is 50%, only those scoring 50 or more will be shortlisted for the Studio Test.

Minimum Qualifying Criteria: B.Des vs M.Des

Programme

Basis of Qualifying Marks

Remarks

B.Des

Studio Test marks (100%)

Candidates must score at least the minimum percentage in Studio Test to qualify for admission.

M.Des

Combined marks of Studio Test + Interview + Portfolio

Minimum marks required in total as well as in each component (as decided by discipline).

Important: For M.Des, qualifying marks may vary discipline-wise. For instance, Animation Film Design may have slightly higher qualifying marks than Apparel Design, depending on the performance spread.

What to Do After the NID Entrance Exam Result 2026

Once the NID 2026 result are declared, the next steps in the admission process vary depending on whether you’re applying for B.Des or M.Des. The DAT Prelims result only determine eligibility for the Mains round, they do not carry any marks or weightage in the final merit list as per the new 2026 pattern. Here’s a complete step-by-step breakdown of what happens next after your NID result is announced.

Step 1: Check Your Shortlisting Status

After the NID DAT Prelims result, the NID portal will clearly mention whether you have been shortlisted for the Mains.

  • Only those who meet the minimum qualifying criteria in their respective category are shortlisted.
  • The NID BDes prelims result and NID MDes prelims result lists are released separately.
  • The scorecard will include your total marks, category rank, and a ‘Shortlisted for Mains: Yes/No’ status.

If shortlisted, candidates move on to the next and most crucial phase, the DAT Mains.

Step 2: Appear for the NID DAT Mains (Studio Test and/or Interview)

The DAT Mains is the deciding factor in the final NID DAT result 2026. Depending on the programme, the Mains process differs slightly:

Programme

Components of Mains

Nature of Test

Weightage in Final Result

B.Des

Studio Test

Hands-on tasks like model making, material handling, drawing from observation, or visual problem solving

100%

M.Des

Studio Test + Interview + Portfolio Review

Tests design thinking, concept visualization, and verbal articulation

100%

Tip: Since Prelims marks no longer contribute to your final merit, performing well in the Mains is now the sole factor determining your admission rank.

Step 3: Final NID DAT Result 2026 and Merit List Preparation

After the completion of all Mains activities, the final NID 2026 result is compiled purely based on Mains performance.

For B.Des:

  • Candidates’ total marks in the Studio Test are normalised and used to prepare the final merit list.
  • The highest scorer in the Studio Test gets Rank 1, followed by others in descending order.

For M.Des:

  • The final merit is calculated using the total marks in Studio Test + Interview + Portfolio, depending on discipline.
  • No marks from Prelims are added to the final result.

Once published, the NID result 2026 PDF will include:

  • Candidate’s name and application number
  • Final score (normalized)
  • Rank and category
  • Admission status

Check: NID Gandhinagar Placements 2026

Step 4: Counselling and Seat Allotment

After the final NID DAT result 2026, the counselling and seat allocation process begins.
Here’s what to expect:

  1. Choice filling: Candidates indicate preferred NID campuses and disciplines (for M.Des).
  2. Seat allotment: Allotment is strictly based on merit rank, category, and seat availability.
  3. Document verification: Candidates must present original documents for eligibility confirmation.
  4. Fee payment: Payment of admission fees secures the allotted seat.
  5. Waitlist movement: If seats remain vacant, candidates from the waitlist are called for subsequent rounds.

Note: NID conducts its own centralized counselling process, you don’t need to apply separately to individual campuses.

Step 5: Campus Allotment and Admission Confirmation

After counselling, selected candidates receive an admission offer letter specifying their campus (Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Bengaluru, etc.) and reporting instructions.
You must:

  • Confirm acceptance by paying the admission fee within the deadline.
  • Complete online document uploads and physical verification, if required.
  • Report to campus for the orientation programme, typically held in July/August 2026.

Failing to confirm within the deadline results in forfeiting the seat, and it’s passed on to the next candidate on the waitlist.

Step 6: What If You Don’t Qualify in NID DAT Result 2026?

If your name doesn’t appear in the final NID merit list, here’s how to plan your next move:

  • Use the experience as a benchmark: Analyze the NID 2026 result scorecard to identify weak areas. For instance, concept clarity or hands-on problem solving.
  • Prepare again strategically: Focus on creative aptitude and studio test practice, as these are now 100% of the final weightage.
  • Explore alternative design colleges through exams like UCEED, NIFT, or CEED that follow similar aptitude-based testing.
  • Keep your portfolio ready: Many private design schools conduct portfolio and interview-based admission, where NID-level preparation gives you a clear advantage.

Step 7: Importance of Keeping NID DAT Result PDF Safe

Always download and store your NID 2026 result PDF for both Prelims and Mains.
This document will be required during:

  • Counselling and admission rounds
  • Document verification
  • Future reference for other design school applications or scholarships
