Key Takeaways

  • CAT 2026 result is expected in the fourth week of December 2026 or first week of January 2027 - IIM Indore is the conducting body
  • Your scorecard contains section-wise scaled scores and percentiles for VARC, DILR, and QA - all three are used by IIMs for shortlisting
  • The CAT scorecard is available only via login at iimcat.ac.in - it is not sent by email or post and cannot be reissued after the download window closes
  • Sectional percentile cut-offs apply at every IIM - a strong overall score with a weak section can still result in no shortlist call
  • Top IIMs (A, B, C) typically require 99 to 100 percentile; Tier 2 IIMs require 95 to 99 percentile for General category
  • PI and WAT preparation must begin immediately after result - shortlists from IIMs start releasing as early as January
  • Supergrads students achieved 99.85, 99.82, and 99.45 percentile in CAT 2025 - with 7 students above 98 percentile in one batch

What Is on the CAT Scorecard?

The scorecard is a single downloadable PDF and it is the only official document confirming your CAT 2026 performance. Colleges, IIMs, and B-schools require this document during admissions. Here is everything that appears on it:

Detail on Scorecard What It Means
Candidate Name and Roll Number   Your identity as registered on the portal during application
Exam Date and Slot Which slot you appeared in - Slot 1, 2, or 3
Section-Wise Scaled Score Normalised score for VARC, DILR, and QA separately - not raw marks
Overall Scaled Score Sum of the three section-wise scaled scores after normalisation
Section-Wise Percentile Your rank relative to all test takers, calculated per section independently
Overall Percentile Your rank among all candidates - this is what IIMs use for shortlisting

The scorecard is available only via login at iimcat.ac.in. It is not sent by email or post under any circumstances. Download it immediately after result day and before the window closes - scorecards cannot be reissued after the deadline passes.

Score vs Percentile - Trends (2021 to 2024)

The table below shows the approximate scores needed to reach key percentile bands in recent years. Use this to benchmark where your performance stands before the official CAT 2026 result is declared:

Percentile CAT 2021   CAT 2022   CAT 2023   CAT 2024
99.5+ Percentile   108 92 86 95
99 Percentile 98 84 76 86
98 Percentile 85 75 68 78
95 Percentile 72 62 55 65
90 Percentile 60 49 44 52
85 Percentile 52 42 38 45
80 Percentile 46 36 33 40
75 Percentile 40 31 28 35
70 Percentile 36 27 24 30

Scores required for the same percentile band can vary significantly year to year based on overall difficulty and number of test takers. The 2023 paper was notably easier, requiring lower raw scores for the same percentile band. Always use these figures as approximate benchmarks, not guarantees.

How the CAT Score Is Calculated - Raw Score, Scaled Score and Normalisation

Understanding how your score is calculated helps you interpret your result correctly and set realistic expectations before the official result is declared. There are three distinct steps:

Step 1 - Raw Score Calculation

Every candidate's raw score is computed first, before any normalisation takes place:

  • +3 marks for every correct answer
  • -1 mark for every incorrect MCQ answer
  • 0 marks for unattempted questions and TITA (non-MCQ) questions

The total raw score equals the sum of section-wise raw scores across VARC, DILR, and QA.

Step 2 - Why Normalisation Happens

CAT is held in 3 slots on the same day. Each slot has a different set of questions. Since one slot may be harder than another, a candidate who appeared in that slot could be disadvantaged if raw scores alone were used. Normalisation corrects for this difference systematically:

Parameter Used in Normalisation What It Accounts For
Highest score in the slot Sets the upper anchor for the normalisation formula
Lowest score in the slot Sets the lower anchor for the normalisation formula
Mean score of the slot Adjusts for the overall difficulty level of that paper
Median score of the slot Balances the distribution mid-point across all three slots
Top 10 percentile performance Normalises high-end score compression between slots
Bottom 10 percentile performance Normalises low-end score distribution between slots

Step 3 - Scaled Score to Percentile

Once scaled scores are calculated, they are ranked across all test takers. Your percentile equals the percentage of candidates who scored less than or equal to your scaled score. This is why:

  • A 1 to 2 mark difference can shift your percentile by 0.1 to 0.5 points at the top of the distribution
  • Your percentile depends on the entire field's performance, not just your score in isolation
  • Section-wise percentiles matter equally - most IIMs use sectional cut-offs in addition to overall percentile for shortlisting

"Tapesh Saxena Sir" Supergrads CAT Faculty - Admissions Strategy

"Focus on both your overall percentile and your section-wise percentiles. A 99 overall with 70 in QA will not get IIM-A calls. Sectional balance is as important as the headline number."

What to Do After Result - Admission Roadmap

The CAT result is just the beginning. Here is the full post-result journey, phase by phase, from scorecard download to receiving your final IIM offer:

Phase 1 - Immediately After the Result (Day 1 to 7)

  • Download and save your scorecard PDF - make 3 printouts and keep a secure soft copy on cloud and local storage
  • Note your overall AND section-wise percentiles - both are used by every IIM and top B-school for shortlisting decisions
  • Compare against IIM cut-offs available at iimcat.ac.in and on institute websites to get a realistic picture of which calls you can expect
  • Begin applying to non-IIM B-schools whose application windows are still open - do not wait for IIM shortlists before applying elsewhere

Phase 2 - IIM Shortlist Stage (January to February)

IIMs release their PI shortlists in January to February after evaluating multiple factors: CAT overall and sectional percentile, Class 10 and Class 12 board performance, graduation marks, work experience, gender diversity, and academic background diversity.

IIM Tier Typical Overall Cut-off (General)   Admission Process
IIM A, B, C (Top 3) 99 to 100 percentile Individual PI and WAT - no IIM CAP participation
IIM L, I, K, Kozhikode (Tier 2) 95 to 99 percentile Individual PI and WAT - no IIM CAP participation
New and Baby IIMs 90 to 95 percentile Common Admission Process (IIM CAP)
Top Non-IIMs (XLRI, MDI, SPJIMR) 90 to 99 percentile Own shortlisting criteria - GD, PI, and WAT rounds

Note: IIM Udaipur, IIM Trichy, IIM Ranchi, IIM Raipur, and IIM Kashipur opted out of IIM CAP 2026. Check individual IIM websites for confirmed participation each year as this changes annually.

Phase 3 - PI and WAT Preparation (February to April)

  • Personal Interview (PI): Cover your profile - academics, work experience, goals, SOP, and current affairs. Be prepared to answer questions from your graduation discipline in depth
  • Written Ability Test (WAT): Practise writing structured 200 to 300 word essays on business, social, and ethical topics. Focus on argument structure over vocabulary
  • Academic Refresh: Be ready to answer specific questions from your undergraduate discipline - this is tested rigorously at most IIMs

Phase 4 - Final Offer (April to May)

Final admission offers and merit lists are released by each institute individually in April to May. The IIM CAP final list typically releases alongside individual IIM offers. Accept your seat within the deadline and complete all joining formalities to confirm your admission.
