What is the difference between NID DAT and NIFT Entrance Exam?

NID DAT is the entrance exam for admission to National Institute of Design for B.Des (UG)  and M.Des (PG) degrees in design. Which Is Harder to Crack - NID or NIFT?

Both the NID and NIFT entrances are competitive, but in different ways. While NID is tougher to crack due to lower overall acceptance rate, fewer seats (across 7 campuses) and a demanding DAT Mains studio round that requires solid design thinking and hands-on making skills that is difficult to teach superficially.

NIFT on the other hand has more seats (across 20 campuses) but a large number of applicants. Plus, the entrance exam has a broader written test (GAT) that covers quantitative ability, English, reasoning, GK and current affairs apart from CAT.

In short, NID rewards design aptitude; while NIFT rewards a balanced approach towards aptitude and a fashion oriented creative ability test.

Can You Apply for Both NID and NIFT?

Yes - and many serious aspirants do. The exams fall in different windows (NID DAT Prelims around December, NIFTEE around February), so you can attempt both in the same cycle.

For PG: 

• Bachelor's Degree of minimum 4-year duration in any specialization, after 12th standard or equivalent to 12th standard from any university and/or institute recognised by the law in India.

National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) 2027

(B.Des & B.FTech) UG:

The maximum age should be less than 24 years as of August 1 of the admission year as per the NIFT entrance exam eligibility criteria 2027. The upper age limit may be relaxed by five years for candidates of Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe/Person with Disability (PWD) categories.

PG: 

No upper age limit.

B.Des & B.FTech: 

Both require the candidate to have passed 10+2 examination from any recognized Central/State Board of Secondary Examination. B.FTech also requires Mathematics as a compulsory subject in 12th.

M.Des & MFM: 

Undergraduate Degree in any discipline from any Institute / University recognized by law in India or Undergraduate Diploma of a minimum of three years duration from NIFT / NID.

M.FTech: 

Requires B.F.Tech from NIFT or any other institute or B.E / B.Tech from any university recognized by law in India.

The design entrance test for admission to NIFT campuses consists of two rounds- Prelims = Creative Ability Test (CAT) + General Ability Test (GAT) and Mains- Situation Test.

However, students seeking admission to Bachelor of Fashion Technology (B.FTECH) will have to appear for the GAT exam only.
