The NID 2020 question paper is the NID DAT Prelims paper for the 2020-21 admission cycle. The B.Des paper (held 29 December 2019, 3 hours, 100 marks) had two parts - Part 1 aptitude/GAT (21 objective questions, 30 marks) and Part 2 creative/CAT (6 drawing questions, 70 marks).
The M.Des paper (2.5 hours, 100 marks) combined a Common Design Aptitude Test with a faculty-specific Domain Test. NID does not officially release papers, so every "NID 2020 question paper with answer" available below is a memory-based reconstruction built from student recalls and expert analysis.

NID does not release its question papers or answer keys on its official portal. So, when you download a NID 2020 question paper with answer, you're getting a version rebuilt from hundreds of student recalls collected right after the exam, then cross-checked and marked by design mentors. It's close to the real thing for pattern, difficulty and question style, but it isn't a scanned original.

Even in 2020, NID rewarded creative execution far more than aptitude - 70% of the marks lived in the drawing section. That priority has only intensified since.
The NID 2020 M.Des question paper was structured differently from B.Des:

Question style |
Mix of objective and subjective |
So, a Product Design (Industrial Design) M.Des aspirant, for example, faced domain-flavored tasks - sketching perspective views of everyday objects, concept-led design ideas and sequential product-development drawings - on top of the common aptitude section.
The GAT split into two mark bands:
The section leaned heavily on awareness in the first half and reasoning/visualization in the second:

Q: Which of the following is not an embroidery tradition of India? (Phulkari / Batik / Kashida / Chamba Rumal)
Ans: Batik (it's an Indonesian wax-resist technique).
Q: The ruins of the Vijayanagara empire are found at?
Ans: Hampi, Karnataka.
Q: Identify the form of the painting and the state it 1s from:

(a) Pattachitra from Bengal (b) Kalighat painting from Bengal (c) Pattachitra from Odisha (d) Mata-ni-Pachhedi from Gujarat
Ans: Kalighat painting from Bengal
Q: Choose the image that completes the pattern:

Ans: Looking closely at Option (A), it provides the precise geometric transition and intermediate rotation required between Shape 4 and Shape 6.
The pattern reward here was accuracy and speed - none of it was hard for a student who read the news and knew basic Indian art and craft, but there were 21 of them to clear before the heavy drawing section.

Q: Draw the following story sequentially in the given 3 frames and give a suitable title of the story. (Use only Pencil, do not use color) 13 Marks One day a man was sitting under a big Jamun tree and taking rest. Suddenly noticed a great pumpkin creeper nearby. He was thinking the foolishness of God. He thought the God gave such a small fruit to this big tree and such a big pumpkin to this fragile and thin creeper. He thought he would have appreciated God's wisdom, if he would have done otherwise. Even as he was thinking this... A small Jamun fruit fell down on the man's head and startled him. ‘O God’ he then bowed down and continued to say ‘you are right after all. If the big fruit like pumpkin had fallen from such a height, I would surely be dead’. Title:______________________________________________

Art, craft & design awareness |
Around ten direct awareness questions - reliable marks if you'd prepared design-relevant GK |

Reasoning & visualization |
Cube, tiles, series and direction questions were quick wins with mock practice |
|
The cube-orientation task |

|
The 15-mark ideation questions |
Original, witty concepts scored high even without polished drawing |
The single biggest score-killer wasn't weak drawing - it was poor time budgeting across the six CAT questions, where students over-detailed the early sketches and ran short on the two high-value 15-mark ideation tasks.
This is the question that actually matters for a 2027 or 2028 aspirant, and it's where a plain PDF download won't help you. Since 2020, NID has steadily shifted weight away from aptitude and toward creativity:

GAT section removed entirely |
Yes, but selectively. Practice the entire creative section (perspective, composition, storyboarding, poster, the cube-orientation logic) because those skills are more important now, not less.
Treat the aptitude section as light revision, not a priority, but don't delete it from your prep, because NID is famously unpredictable and GAT-style questions could reappear in a new form.
