NID 2027 Question Paper: What Changed This Year (Exam Pattern Changes)

The headline change carried over from 2026- the objective GAT section is gone, and the Prelims is 100% creative and drawing-based (Expected). Until 2025, the paper had two parts - GAT (reasoning, GK, maths, English) and CAT (drawing).

NID dropped GAT in 2026 without any prior notice, and the 2027 paper is expected to keep that subjective-only structure.

What this means for you is that the exam is now purely a test of how you think, observe and communicate visually - there's nowhere to "score easy marks" with memorized GK. For the confirmed structure, see the NID DAT exam pattern page.

Pattern element 2027 (Expected) 2026 (actual)
GAT / objective section Not present Removed
Paper type Fully drawing-based Fully drawing-based
Major questions ~6 with sub-parts 6 with ~3 sub-parts each
Total sketches ~14-18 14-18
Duration 3 hours 3 hours
Negative marking None None

NID 2027 Memory Based Questions (Section-Wise)

We'll add each question here as it's confirmed, then release the full NID 2027 Question Paper PDF the same evening. Experts predict the paper to remain drawing-based only, so questions are grouped by type, not section. (Until exam day, 2027 cells show the expected style)

Use these to master the question type, not to memorize topics - this exam rarely repeats an exact question.

CAT / Subjective Section

Question Type NID 2026 (actual) NID 2027 How to crack it
Visual Storytelling Passage on Ramanujan → 3 story scenes [To be updated] (Expected: situation → 3-4 frames) Use thumbnail method to plan beginning-middle-end before drawing
Product Use / Redesign Oddly-moulded specs → 3 conventional uses [To be updated]  (Expected: redesign / alt-uses of an object) Name the real problem, then 2-3 labelled ideas
Context-Switch One bottle in 3 settings - hospital, restaurant, party [To be updated]  (Expected: 1 object, 3 environments) Keep object same; change mood + surroundings
Empathy / User Scenario Help an elderly person who stumbles; items to carry with grandma [To be updated]  (Expected: care/user-need scenario) Solve the person's real need first
Communication / Poster Crow-wants-juice poster; 3-post awareness series [To be updated]  (Expected: poster/campaign on a theme) One idea, high contrast, readable in 3 seconds
Observation / Cultural Illustrate shikanji & thandai; draw a product you love [To be updated]  (Expected: memory drawing / cultural illustration) Accurate proportions + recognizable details

NID 2027 Question Paper Analysis: Overall Difficulty Level (Expected)

Based on the 2026 trend and current direction, the 2027 paper is expected to be moderate to difficult, with the real challenge being length and time management rather than tough concepts.

The prompts are easy to understand, but generating original ideas fast and executing 14-18 clear sketches in three hours - is where students feel the pressure.

Aspect Difficulty (Expected) Why
Understanding the prompts Easy Questions are simply worded
Idea generation Moderate-Hard Original ideas under time pressure
Time management Hard High sketch count in 3 hours
Drawing skill required Moderate Clarity valued over finish

What Could be the Good Attempts in NID 2027?

(Expected) In a fully subjective paper, "good attempts" isn't just about how many questions you finished - it's about how clearly you communicated your ideas.

Students who attempt all or nearly all questions with strong ideation, storytelling and legible visuals are expected to be in a comfortable position.

A smaller number of well-thought, clearly-labelled sketches usually score more than all questions solved in rushed with cluttered drawings.

  • Ideal Scenario: You attempt most questions with clear, unique, and innovative ideas with good time distribution.
  • Doubtful Scenario: You attempt at least half or 75% of questions, include ideas but not presented well or illustrated in a hurry.
  • Risky: Less than half completed, or good-looking drawings but with weak ideas.

(Exact good-attempt numbers will be updated here from student feedback within 24 hours of the exam.)

NID 2027 Sample Questions and Answers (Practice Set)

Original, exam-style sample questions with model approaches to practice with right now. Study how a strong answer thinks, not just what to draw.

Sample 1 (Storytelling): Create and illustrate the story of a street vendor's day from morning to evening in 4 frames.

How to Approach:

Frame 1 can showcase setup (empty stall, sunrise), Frame 2 can be about the peak timing of the business (crowd, energy), and Frame 3 shows the closing time with different elements & expressions like shopkeeper counting coins, tired, and smiling).

Sample 2 (Context switching): Draw a single wooden chair as it would appear in a classroom, a garden, and a museum.

What to draw:

Same object- the wooden chair in three moods and surroundings -one can be shown worn and functional, other weathered and relaxed, and one as roped-off and precious. Questions like these test observation and storytelling together.

Sample 3 (Product thinking): Redesign a water bottle for someone who cycles to work.

How to think:

Name the real problem (drinking without stopping), then 2–3 ideas (frame-mount, bite-valve, magnetic cap). Label functions; insight first, sketch second.

NID 2027 vs 2026 vs Past Papers: How the Paper Evolved

Feature 2027 (Expected) 2026 2025 & earlier
Sections CAT only CAT only GAT + CAT
Objective questions None None Yes (GK, reasoning, maths)
Core skill tested Ideation + visual comms Ideation + visual comms Aptitude + drawing
Paper length Lengthy Lengthy Moderate
Difficulty Moderate–difficult Moderate-difficult Easy-moderate
Sketches ~14-18 14-18 Fewer

The clear trajectory- the exam keeps moving away from memorizable aptitude and toward pure design thinking. Practice this pattern with NID sample papers.

How the NID 2027 Paper Is Expected to Impact the Cut-Off (Expected)

NID DAT cut off depend on difficulty level, applicant numbers and seats. A lengthy, moderate-to-difficult paper usually keeps the qualifying bar from spiking. Going by recent trends, the Open-category Prelims cut-off is expected in the high-50s to mid-60s, with reserved categories lower.

Remember: Prelims only shortlists you - your final rank comes from DAT Mains.

Category Expected Prelims cut-off band (Expected)
Open / General ~58–66
EWS ~48–54
OBC ~50–56
SC / ST Lower, varies by discipline

Most Repeated Concepts & Topic Weightage in the NID Question Paper

The official NID exam syllabus is not published by the conducting body, nor do they mention any fixed number of questions or topics - so no one can give you a "guaranteed" weightage. What we can do is read the pattern.

The table below is built from analyzing the NID 2027 question paper alongside recent years, showing which important topics appear most often in NID and how much of your prep time each deserves.

Concept / theme How often it appears
Empathy & human-centred scenarios Very high
Visual storytelling & sequencing Very high
Everyday product use & redesign High
Communication / poster design High
Social & environmental awareness High
Context-switch (object in different settings) Medium-High
Indian culture & context illustration Medium
Observation & memory drawing Medium
Symbolism & sign design Medium

How to read this table- the top three themes show up in almost every paper, so they should take the biggest share of your practice. The lower-frequency ones still appear - just don't over-invest before you've mastered the essentials.

What Should You Do After the NID 2027 Exam?

The hours right after the paper are the most wasted in the whole NID journey. Most students just refresh forums and wait - but results are weeks away (Expected- 16 Feb 2027 for M.Des, 16 March 2027 for B.Des & Integrated).

That gap is exactly the head start toppers use. Whatever your paper felt like, one of these three paths is yours. Pick it today.

Your read on the paper Do this first Track this
Went well Start Mains / Studio Test prep now Mains admit card & dates (Expected)
Borderline Keep Mains prep warm Cut-off + result pages
Didn't go well Plan a next attempt or a parallel exam UCEED / NIFT timelines

If you think it went well - don't wait for results.

  • Prelims only shortlists you; your rank is decided entirely by DAT Mains (Studio Test + interview for M.Des).
  • B.Des: start basic studio test prep + ready your basic portfolio for in-person sensitivity test
  • M.Des: rehearse with how to ace the NID interview + 500-word SoP

If you're on the borderline - assume you're in.

  • A lengthy subjective paper makes self-scoring hard, so don't talk yourself out of it.
  • Keep sketching for the Studio Test and watch the cut-off and result pages.
  • Prep you can pause costs nothing; a shortlist you weren't ready for costs a year.

If it didn't go as planned - you have more paths than you think.

  • One exam doesn't decide a design career. A focused second attempt is very doable.
  • NID isn't your only route- UCEED opens the IITs' design programs; NIFT leads to fashion and lifestyle design - both test similar creative thinking.
  • Running two design entrances in parallel isn't a backup plan - it's how serious aspirants improve their odds.

Conclusion:

The NID 2027 question paper confirms where NID is heading- away from what you can memorize and toward how you think, observe, and communicate as a designer.

There's no official paper and no answer key - but the pattern is clear, and clarity is all you need to prepare well.

Here’s what to take away:

  • Idea quality matter more than drawing quality - A clear, on-brief concept scores higher than a polished sketch every single time.
  • Practice the types of questions, not topics - If you check NID previous year papers, you can draw out a pattern where the majority of drawing/design questions fall into 5-6 major categories. Once you understand this, any prompt feels familiar.
  • Prelims is a gateway, not the finish - Your rank is won in the Studio Test. So if you’re confident you’ll clear the first stage, start Mains prep immediately.

Whether this was your attempt or a trial run for the upcoming years, you now know exactly what the paper asks and how it's judged. That's the hard part solved. The rest is focused, timed practice - and that's fully in your hands.
