NID does not publish any official aptitude syllabus. The aptitude section (informally the "GAT") traditionally covered logical reasoning, visual/non-verbal reasoning, basic quantitative ability, English, and general awareness.
Most frequently asked type of questions included- visualization or image-based observation questions (top/side view, paper folding, cubes, counting surfaces, mirror images, etc.) and design related GK.
Note that surprisingly, in the 2026 Prelims this section did not appear. The paper was 100% drawing-only. Plus, NID hasn't confirmed the return of aptitude so far.
So prepare aptitude as a backup, focusing on visual reasoning and design-related general awareness, while keeping your main effort on the drawing section.

Explore as we delve deeper into the analysis of NID Aptitude Test Syllabus, its significance in the overall NID DAT exam 2027, proven strategies to crack this section and analysis of the Aptitude asked in the past year papers. As a bonus, we share the exact list of NID subject-wise topics to focus on.
There have been conventionally 2 main components of the NID DAT exam:
|
Exam Component |
What It Tests |
Key Skills Assessed |
|
Part 1 (Objective; Aptitude) |
Aptitude & reasoning |
Logic, observation, awareness |
|
Part 2 (Drawing) |
Drawing & design thinking | Creativity, visualization, storytelling |
The presence of objective/subjective sections may vary year-to-year as NID does not declare a fixed pattern.
Traditionally, the NID DAT Prelims was a 3-hour examination comprising both objective & subjective sections. However, NID 2026 marked a significant shift, with the prelims consisting of a CAT-only paper focused entirely on drawing-based questions. Since NID does not announce a fixed exam pattern or detailed syllabus on their official website, the format of future exams remains uncertain.
As a result, aspirants can no longer depend solely on past trends, and it is unclear whether the GAT section will return in NID 2027 or later years. Therefore, the most reliable strategy is balanced preparation, with a strong emphasis on CAT, while maintaining basic readiness for GAT to handle any unexpected changes.

For the full stage-by-stage structure and more details on recent changes in the aptitude section of the exam, see the NID DAT exam pattern.
Following are our exclusive insights after an in-depth analysis of the aptitude section from past two years:
1. The General aptitude section included 19 questions from verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning, and mainly on general awareness. The difficulty level was easy to moderate.
2. Most of the objective-type questions were image-based and required the candidate to have sound observation and visualization skills. Specially for questions involving mirror images, folding and unfolding of structures, top view/side view and counting the shapes.
3. There were no questions on Quant.
Break the NID Aptitude Test syllabus down based on manageable daily and weekly targets. Revisit it to keep a tab on your progress. In case you find a topic particularly difficult in your mock tests, increase the amount of time you spend practicing it every day.
Apart from preparing for static NID GK Syllabus 2027, also keep a close tab on important global affairs and developments in the world of design.
Identify your weak areas and prioritize to perfect those. Allocate comparatively more time to revise such topics and solve as many problems on them as possible.
It's highly advisable to take up periodic practice tests, irrespective of the status of your preparation. These tests are designed to mimic exam-like question papers and time conditions. The more sample tests you attend, the better you'll understand the exam pattern and your own strengths and weaknesses. And in turn, you will also be better equipped to recognize the amount of time you can afford to contribute to each section.
For example: By solving frequent NID mock tests, you discover that it takes you more time to tackle quant questions than all other sections, you can plan to address them accordingly.
By solving aptitude problems from NID previous year question papers, you can familiarize yourself with the key topics and difficulty level of questions asked from each in the NID Aptitude Test Syllabus. Plus, as you apply your understanding of the topics to solve questions asked in your target exam previously, you can improve your memory retention as well.
Formulas, shortcuts, and tricks on a routine basis.
Also idioms etc. so that you can quickly go through them during revision all at once.
Although the weightage of aptitude questions is rather less and sometimes even zero (in 2026), when compared to subjective questions. In case it does reappear, you can expect around 14-20 questions in the exam.
So a sensible NID 2027 preparation strategy would be spend maximum time practicing for the drawing/creative section, and reserve 2-3 short but focused sessions in a week for aptitude, mostly weighted towards non-verbal or visual reasoning + design related general awareness. Recent trends have seen very minimal to no quant or English questions. You can cover them on a basic level from PYQs or NCERTs.
This way, even if GAT returns, you're prepared for the same.
The gist is that even if you feel aptitude is your strong suit, still treat it as a bonus and not as a scoring means. Rather focus on strengthening your creativity and drawing skills than banking on aptitude to get through DAT Prelims, as the shrinking weightage of objective aptitude makes the strategy highly unreliable.
Resource: NID Preparation Books 2027 recommended by toppers and experts.
1. Not focusing on understanding the concepts and trying to memorize things. As a result, you might fail to solve uncommon or more complex versions of the same question.
2. Use of multiple books, study material, or online platforms might end up confusing you. Instead identify a good reliable source of comprehensive NID exam study material and focus on practicing as much as you can.
3. You may be attempting every single mock at your disposal, but if you do not analyze your performance at the micro level, you might fail to identify and fill your knowledge gaps.
Since aptitude questions must be answered fast to spare enough time for drawing, use these time-management tips for NID.
NID requires that the candidates who wish to pursue design should have general competence to solve real-world, complex design problems and not just subject specific knowledge. It wants to asses the potential of a candidate for different advanced career positions and design educational programs.
Plus, practicing and developing general aptitude skills can not only help you crack highly competitive exams like NID but can also help improve your overall decision-making and cognitive skills.
Now that you have all the required details of the NID Aptitude Test syllabus 2027, you can start your preparation with confidence.
