XAT Preparation: How do you start the XAT Preparation?

  • Candidates planning to start the XAT Preparation in advance, especially with 6 months in hand, should do it strategically, make a proper study plan, and follow it religiously.
  • Before making a study plan, candidates should ensure that certain steps of XAT Preparation are followed for the smooth execution of the plan they will prepare!
    1. XAT Preparation should always start with studying the XAT Exam Pattern and Syllabus to determine what topics to study and avoid.
    2. Solve the Previous Year’s Question Paper to check your current level and identify your strengths and weaknesses so that you can plan your XAT Preparation accordingly.
    3. Focus more on your weaknesses, but never ignore your strengths. It is very important to turn your weaknesses into strengths, but it is also equally important to keep polishing your strengths so you do not lose their hold.
    4. Gather all the necessary XAT Preparation resources and XAT Preparation Books in advance.
    5. Make a time-bound XAT Preparation plan and dedicate 4-5 hours daily to cover the entire syllabus.
    6. The XAT Preparation plan should devote separate time to the Decision-making and General Knowledge sections as they are unique to XAT. The XAT preparation plan for the other sections can be combined with competitive exams like the CAT but with varied difficulty levels.
    7. The XAT Preparation plan should include regular mock tests and shouldn’t be left only at the end after completing the entire syllabus. It is important to note that mock tests prepare you for the exam environment and stress management, in addition to helping with the syllabus. Hence, mock tests should go hand in hand with the XAT preparation.
    8. The XAT Preparation plan should devote proper time to revising the syllabus and shortcut tricks.

XAT Preparation: How to Prepare for XAT in 6 months?

  • XAT Preparation Start Date: May/June
  • XAT Preparation Over Date: December
  • XAT Preparation after December 10: Mock Tests, Revision of Short Cut tricks, and Analysing Mocks to brush up on concepts; nothing new should be done in these days.

XAT preparation can be completed very calmly in 6 months by devoting 4-5 hours daily to cracking the exam. The XAT Preparation plan should be something similar to the plan below:

  • The most important part of XAT Preparation is starting to read news articles and newspapers daily to improve your reading and articulation speed and GK. GK is crucial for the XAT Exam and can make or break your chances of entering XLRI.
  • The First step of XAT Preparation is to study the XAT Exam Pattern and Syllabus to determine the topics to cover and estimate the areas of strength and weakness.
  • Conduct a Pre-Mock Test to analyse your current level and note your strengths and weaknesses.
  • In the first part of XAT Preparation, devote 120-150 minutes daily to your strong areas and practice the difficult-level questions for all the sections of the XAT.
  • Study the Shortcut tricks for the strong areas and try to solve the questions with those tricks to keep them at your fingertips and add them to your mental and physical reflex systems.
  • The second part of XAT Preparation should focus on the weaker areas. You should take one section(QADI, VALR, DM), give 120-150 minutes to the topics you are weak at, and try to convert them to your strengths.
  • The XAT Preparation for weaker areas should focus solely on Theory. It should be the combination of the first theory of one topic and then questions of that topic. You should try to cover at least 50 questions each for the Easy, Medium and Difficult categories.
  • Enrol in a Question Bank and Mock series from a good coaching institute to access the latest question types and shortcut tricks. XAT Preparation is incomplete without a good question bank.
  • You can also purchase the latest versions of XAT Preparation Books for the question bank and Mock Tests.
  • The perfect XAT Preparation plan should include solving 5-7 Reading Comprehensions, 5-7 sets of DI, LR and DM each and a minimum of 50 questions each for all the remaining sections.
  • Students should try solving questions in a time-bound environment daily to adapt to the exam environment and stress levels and learn time management.

Even if you don’t have 6 months for XAT preparation, there is no need to get demotivated. It is not the number of months that matters for XAT preparation; instead, you can divide it into a number of hours.

The total number of hours required to prepare for XAT is 700-800. This time can be shortened depending upon the clarity of concepts you possess at the start of preparation. If the basics of all subjects are clear, XAT preparation can also be done in 500 hours.
