• Originally known as Ramachandra Pandurang Tope, he was one of the most outstanding leaders of India’s First War of Independence in 1857.
• He was a Maratha Brahman in the service of the former Peshwa ruler of the Maratha confederacy, Baji Rao and his adopted son Nana Sahib.
• In 1851, when Lord Dalhousie deprived Nana Saheb of his father's pension, Tatya Tope along with Nana Saheb became a sworn enemy of the British.
• In 1857, he led a revolt against British forces along with Jhansi ki Rani and Nana Sahib and gave his important contribution in the First War of Independence (1857-58).
• However, he was captured by the British Forces in April 1859.
• After a hurried trial for waging war against the East India Company, he was hanged to death on 18 April 1859 at Shivpuri, Madhya Pradesh by British Forces.
