Factors Affecting the West Bengal Judicial Service Cut Off 2026

WBPSC doesn't announce a fixed pass mark for the prelims. It works backwards from the number of candidates it wants to call for the Final exam, so the cut-off is simply the score of the last candidate who makes it into that list in each category.

The cut-off depends on these factors:

  • Vacancies - More seats usually mean a longer shortlist and a lower cut-off. The 2023 cycle had 54 vacancies for Civil Judge (Junior Division).
  • Difficulty of the paper - An easier paper pushes everyone's score up, and the cut-off follows.
  • Applicants in each category - A small pool, as with ST, can swing sharply when a few candidates score high.
  • Reservation rules in force -  The change to a single OBC category in 2026 is a good example of how policy can reshape the numbers.

West Bengal Judiciary Previous Years Cutoff

The key points from the 2021 and 2020 cutoffs are:

  • The General cutoff went from 95.33 in 2020 to 123.67 in 2021, an increase of more than 28 marks in one cycle.
  • Every category listed in both years went up in 2021. OBC-B rose from 69.33 to 95.67, SC from 69.67 to 93.33, and OBC-A from 64.33 to 84.67.
  • The 2021 cycle had only 14 Civil Judge (Junior Division) vacancies. With so few seats, the shortlist was small and the cutoff went up.
  • In 2021, 141 candidates qualified for the Final Examination. Of the 91 who cleared the General cutoff, 16 were from reserved categories and qualified without any relaxation.
  • No ST or PwBD cutoff was published for 2021, so a comparison for those categories isn’t possible.
  • In 2020, the SC, OBC-B and ST cutoffs were very close, all between 68.33 and 69.67. In 2021, SC and OBC-B moved well ahead of each other’s range.

What After West Bengal Judiciary Prelims Cutoff 2026

The 493 candidates who cleared the West Bengal Judiciary Prelims Cutoff 2026 will now move to the Final Written Examination and can start preparing for their Mains (Written) exam. The prelims was only a screening test, and those marks will not count in the final merit list.

Next steps for qualified candidates:

  • Wait for the Final exam schedule - WBPSC has said the detailed schedule will be published shortly on psc.wb.gov.in. No date has been announced yet, so check the website regularly.
  • Know the Final exam pattern - The written stage has compulsory and optional papers. In past cycles, each paper carried 100 marks and ran for three hours. All answers are descriptive, so writing practice matters more than MCQ practice now.
  • Prepare for the Personality Test - Candidates who do well in the written exam are called for the Personality Test, which carried 100 marks in earlier cycles. The final merit list is based on the written exam and Personality Test marks together.
  • Know the minimum qualifying marks - Under the 2023 cycle rules, the minimum aggregate in the written exam and Personality Test together was 40% for UR and EWS, 38% for OBC, 35% for SC, and 30% for ST and PwBD. Check the Advt. No. 9/2024 notice for this cycle’s rule.
  • Update criminal law notes -  The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA) have replaced the IPC, CrPC and Evidence Act. Use the new section numbers in your answers.
  • Keep your documents ready - WBPSC will verify proof of age, academic qualification, caste certificate, EWS certificate and PwBD certificate before the Personality Test.
  • Don’t miss the original certificates -  As per the result notice, a candidate who cannot produce the required original certificates will not be interviewed, and their candidature can be cancelled.
  • Remember that selection is provisional -  WBPSC can cancel a candidature at any stage, even after the appointment letter is issued, if the candidate is found ineligible under the advertisement.
