How to Apply for the Tamil Nadu Judiciary?

Age

1. For the Civil Judge role, the advocates should be actively practising and must not have attained the age of 35 by the time of recruitment (General), while aspirants from SC/ST should achieve no more than 40 years. 
2. The minimum age for fresh law graduates in all categories is 22 years, and the maximum is 27 years.

Nationality

• You must be of Indian nationality and have at least one administration document proving it.
• Also, if you are a Domicile prospect (a Tamil Nadu resident), bring your residential credential because Domiciles are given priority over nominees from different states.

Qualifications

• A law degree (LLB) (either Hons or Integrated) from a university recognised by the UGC and accredited by the Bar Council of India is required (BCI).
• You must have no paper left for your appearance. Your results should include a score for all past papers with no backlog.
• You should have acquired itthree3 years before the application date. 
• Also, your score can increase by more than 50% but should not decrease by more than 45% (because it is the last limit). 

Note: if you have applied as a legal practitioner, you must continue your practice till the time of appointment. Also, you can apply as a Public Prosecutor at the District Courts. 

Language

• You must have proficiency in English and Tamil, Reading, Writing, and Speaking (Tamil natives will get more preference).
• Applicants with insufficient knowledge of Tamil may apply. If chosen, you must qualify for the Second Class Language Test in Tamil during your probation/training period.
• Also, your English should be strong from grammatical aspects because it is crucial.

Tamil Nadu Judiciary Vacancy

For the upcoming recruitment of 2023, there is no official notification yet announcing the vacancies. However, in 2019, the number of vacancies was around 176.

So, we can assume that the upcoming vacancies of judiciary exam can be somewhere between 170-180 (it strictly depends upon the requirement of judges/Additional Judges are District courts or High Courts).

Part C

General Science & General knowledge: Concentrate on all legal terminologies and current events affecting domestic and global law. Also covered is the evolution of law from both an Indian and a global perspective. Mental Abilities and Reasonings: Some focus areas include high-end reasoning abilities such as pattern, direction, sitting arrangement, blood relation, and legal reasoning (comprehending the passage).

Mains

In the Mains Examination, you need to write four papers, each having a duration of 3 hours with 100 marks each (400 in total). These papers are usually descriptive and require a deep knowledge of legal jargon and analytical and critical case study analysis.

Language Translation

This paper will mainly focus on your expertise in Tamil and English. Here you will be given judgments, pleading, despotic, or other legally relevant information in English and Tamil.

All you need to do is translate those pieces according to the instructions. Your English grammar will also be tested (it will be very basic, so you need not panic about it. Just make sure you know all the grammar concepts and are good at going.). 

Legal Paper 1

In the first paper, you have to deal with the question picked up from the underlined topics.

Legal Paper 2

In the second paper, you must deal with all the case clauses and write under the Central and State farm laws. Also, the analysis of Judgement in Civil Cases and writing analysed essays will be the topic to deal with in the second part.

Legal paper 3 

In the third paper, you have to deal with farm law and all the criminal aspects involved. You have to analyse and write comments on the judgments previously passed in similar cases. 

Viva Voce

There is no set syllabus for Viva Voce; however, you will be asked questions based on the cases you have represented and your perspectives on various social and legal crises. You will also be tested on your personality.

So, stay confident and informed about various aspects of the law. In this round, you need to score at least 14 marks to rank amongst the qualified candidates.

Notes: you have to score a minimum of 45% on each paper. Also, your writing should be free of ambiguity and full of authenticity and verified information. Reference to previous cases will do the trick here. 

What after getting selected for Tamil Nadu Judicial Service Examination? 

Document verification: Once you clear all the rounds, you have to submit your documents for verification, so there are no discrepancies between you and the authorities. Judiciary allotments: As soon as your documents are verified, you will be sent for probation/training according to the quota allotment and then be able to join as Judge/Prosecutor at District Civil Courts.
