Class 11 Business Studies Syllabus (CBSE & ICSE) 2023-24

Business Studies is one of the mandatory subjects in class 11 commerce subjects. To help you understand the important topics and weightage, we have explained the Class 11 Business Studies Syllabus for both the CBSE and ICSE board. 

Business, profession, and employment, Sole Proprietorship, merits and limitations, Hindu Undivided Family Business, Role of business in environment protection, are some of the important topics in the Class 11 Business Studies Syllabus.

Part-A: Foundation of Business

Unit 1: Evaluation and Fundamentals of Business

  • History of Trade and Commerce in India: Indigenous Banking System, Rise of Intermediaries, Transport, Trading Communities: Merchant Corporations, Major Trade Centers, Major Imports and Exports, Position of Indian SubContinent in the World Economy.

  • Business services – meaning and types. Banking: Types of bank accounts - savings, current, recurring, fixed deposit, and multiple option deposit account
  • Banking services with particular reference to Bank Draft, Bank Overdraft, Cash credit. E-Banking meaning, Types of digital payments
  • Insurance – Principles. Types – life, health, fire, and marine insurance – concept
  • Postal Service - Mail, Registered Post, Parcel, Speed Post, Courier - meaning

Unit 5: Emerging Modes of Business

  • E-business: concept, scope, and benefits
  • Business Process Outsourcing (BPO): Concept, need, and scope

Unit 6: Social Responsibility of Business and Business Ethics

  • Concept of social responsibility
  • Case for social responsibility
  • Responsibility towards owners, investors, consumers, employees, government, and community

Part-B: Finance and Trade

The Part B syllabus of 11th business studies covers topics like sources of business finance, small business, internal trade, and international business.

Unit 7: Sources of Business Finance

  • Business finance: Concept and Importance
  • Owners’ funds- equity shares, preferences share, retained earnings, Global Depository Receipt (GDR), American Depository Receipt (ADR), and International Depository Receipt (IDR) – concept
  • Borrowed funds: debentures and bonds, a loan from a financial institution and commercial banks, public deposits, trade credit

Unit 8: Small Business and Entrepreneurship Development

  • Role of small business in India with special reference to rural areas

Unit 9: Internal Trade

  • Internal trade - meaning and types of services rendered by a wholesaler and a retailer

Class 11 Business Studies Syllabus 2023-24 (CBSE & ICSE)

As you know, due to the non-functioning of schools, CBSE and ICSE board had released a revised syllabus PDF. It was notified that the reduction in the syllabus is only for 2020-21, however, from the coming year, the syllabus shall remain the same as 2019.

Deleted Portion of CBSE Class 11 Business Studies Syllabus 2023-24

In the previous academic year 2023-24, CBSE and ICSE board had reduced the syllabus for all streams nearly by 30%. This deletion of topics was informed only for 2023-24, however, there is no official notification regarding the deletion of topics this year.
