West Bengal Judicial Service, known as W.B.J.S is the Judicial Service of the Indian state of West Bengal. The public Service Commission of West Bengal arranges competitive examinations for W.B.J.S in three phases. These phases are Preliminary, Mains Exam, and Personality Test.

This service was renamed after West Bengal Civil Service the officers of the West Bengal judicial services are often placed in the post of Civil Judge ( junior division ) or first class judicial magistrate under the West Bengal government. The officers may be further promoted as a district judge or even as a judge at the Calcutta high court depending upon their seniority.

WBPSC Civil Judge Prelims syllabus consists of questions on English Composition will cover up synonyms, antonyms, idioms and phrases, vocabulary test, phrasal verbs, the same words bearing more than one meaning, use of appropriate and qualifying words etc.

There will also be questions regarding general knowledge, law of limitation, civil procedure codes, criminal procedure code with Indian penal code, Indian constitution, law of contracts and torts and personal law.

WBPSC Civil Judge Mains Syllabus consists if 2 parts – the compulsory and the optional part. Given below is the list if both the papers.

Given below is the list of optional papers (any 3 papers to be chosen by the candidate)

Principles of equity including the Law of Trusts and specific relief
Law of limitation and Law of Prescription
The Indian Constitution and Constitutional Law

The standard of examination in the Law papers (Compulsory and Optional) will be that of the LL.B. Degree of the Calcutta University. All answers must be written either in English or in Bengali (unless otherwise directed in the question papers) except in the language papers.

West Bengal Judiciary Viva-Voce 2023

West Bengal judiciary viva-voce selection board must call a number of eligible candidates from the mains exams with qualifying marks for the viva-voce test. It is strictly made on the basis of a merit list prepared of aggregate marks scored by a candidate. But the number of candidates called shall not be more than five times than the number of vacant posts available.

The high court may reserve the right to relax the eligibility criteria of the aspirants and also the qualifying marks in any particular subject.

The Preliminary Examination is meant to serve as a screening test only for the purpose of selection of candidates for the Final Examination.

The marks obtained by the candidates in the Preliminary Examination will not be counted for the purpose of determining the final merit list.

The Final merit list will be prepared on the basis of total marks obtained in the Final Examination and the Personality Test.

There shall be no separate qualifying marks for any individual paper or for the Personality Test. The Commission shall have discretion to fix qualifying marks in the aggregate.
