UK 'knitted satellite ‘CarbSar’ will see Earth day or night
Named CarbSar (Satellite ) the mission will launch next year, and could help fill a gap in Britain's spying capacity. The satellite will use radar technology to see through cloud and will even work at night.
The Ukraine conflict has shown the value of such systems, which have been used to monitor Russian positions. The Britain is the only permanent member of the UN Security Council without its own system.
The two UK companies - Surrey Satellite Technology Limited and Oxford Space Systems - believe they can provide a similar, home-grown capability. They will start building their spacecraft this year - with government support - and with a launch on an American rocket already booked.
SSTL has a long-established reputation for aerospace manufacturing; the real novelty is in the OSS radar antenna. SSTL and OSS hope their CarbSar pathfinder will put them in a strong position to win future contracts to supply operational spacecraft to the UK government for both civil and military applications.
Mark Nicholas to become next president of MCC
Former England cricketer and veteran commentator Mark Nicholas has been elected as the next president of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC)
Nicholas will replace current president Stephen Fry and will assume responsibilities in October this year. His appointment was announced at the Club’s Annual General Meeting.
Nicholas, who was elected as a Member of MCC in 1981, is one of the most recognisable figures in televised cricket, leading coverage at the very top of the game across the world.
Mark scored over 25,000 runs - including an unbeaten hundred for MCC at Lord’s against the 1985 Australians - and took 173 wickets in a professional career spanning over two decades. He also captained Hampshire to four major trophies, three of which came in finals at Lord’s.

India and Russia explore accepting RuPay and Mir cards for easy payments
India and Russia have agreed to explore the possibility of accepting each other's payment cards, RuPay (India) and Mir (Russia), for hassle-free payments between the two countries. During the latest meeting of the Internal Governmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological, and Cultural Cooperation (IRIGC-TEC), which was jointly chaired by External Affairs Minister of India S Jaishankar and Russia's Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov, the decision was made.
Mutual acceptance of RuPay and Mir cards will facilitate transactions in Indian rupees and Russian rubles, making it easier for citizens of both countries to carry out cross-border payments. In addition, the meeting also explored the possibility of interaction between India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and Russia's Faster Payments System (FPS).

Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra clinches Doha Diamond League title
Olympic champion javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra began his Diamond League title defence with a comfortable win in the season-opening leg in Doha last night. The 25-year-old Chopra, who had pocketed the 2022 Diamond League Final trophy in Switzerland last September, beat a star-studded field with a best throw of 88.67m to begin his season in style. Chopra hit his straps in his first attempt itself with a world-leading throw of 88.67m, which was his fourth career-best effort, to position himself on the top of the pile. He maintained the lead till the end to win the event in his second appearance at the Qatar Sports Club. Czech Republic’s Vadlejch stood second, with Grenada’s Peters finishing third. With this win, Neeraj has also bagged the world lead.
